Washington St. repave and speech suppression on tap at City Council

Tonight’s City Council meeting is like a double feature of a children’s movie followed by a horror show.

First, we will learn what reaction is to further examining a proposal by the Administration to repave Washington Street. The overhaul will come in at $9 million and needs to be bonded. That means six votes.

But the mayor only can reliably count on five council members to consider her proposals as MORTe acts as a united hydra with multi heads to vote down proposals requiring six votes with regularity. Read More...

Mayor Zimmer rebukes Occhipinti ordinance on residents board service

The above statement is from Mayor Zimmer added into the council package as part of a letter to the City Council.

It makes several key substantive points noting Tim Occhipinti’s proposed ordinance does not meet the local ethics law passed in 2010, it seeks protection from criticism re: disparagement of elected officials – meaning MORTe, and this without holding themselves to those standards.

The complete letter issued yesterday can be found in here:

Hoboken Planning Board to Shipyard on Monarch Project: YOU’RE OUT!!!

Just in time for the All-Star Game, the Hoboken Planning Board kicked the Shipyard to the curb, jettisoning their application with no hearing on the merits  according to eyewitness reports.

The City currently has a lawsuit against the Shipyard for its failure to fulfill an earlier agreement.  That agreement permitted development in the northeast with the area of the proposed Monarch project set aside for parking, tennis courts and other amenities.

Basing their action on the outstanding State of NJ appeal with the Department of Environmental Protection, the Hoboken Planning Board denied the Shipyard application until a result is given in court. Read More...

US Jobs Report – the skinny from NJ’s Senate Candidates

Last Friday, the Bureau of Labor Statistics report on June unemployment and job creation was released and MSV has sought out comment from both NJ candidates for US Senator.

For June, the official unemployment rate remains at 8.2% with only 80,000 new jobs and 85,000 signing up for disability.

Da Horsey yesterday contacted the press secretary for US Senator Bob Menendez but was unable to obtain comment on the June jobs report.  We’ll update if that changes.

NJ State Senator Joe Kyrillos provided the following statement. Read More...

Washington Street up for improvement

City of Hoboken announces:

=&0=& Streets improvement bond would also cover Sinatra Drive, Observer Highway & Newark Street

The Zimmer Administration is introducing a bond ordinance to begin the process of upgrading and modernizing the entire length of Washington Street, including repaving the road, installing modern traffic signals with pedestrian countdown timers, and installing ADA-compliant crosswalks and ramps.

“Washington Street is the hub of social life and business activity in Hoboken – with great restaurants and outdoor cafés, excellent shopping, art galleries, studios, and more,” said Mayor Dawn Zimmer. “This vibrant street is important to the quality of life of our residents, and by revitalizing this important corridor, we will also benefit our local economy, improve pedestrian safety, and make Hoboken more inviting to everyone.”

A series of public meetings will be held to solicit community input to develop plans for Washington Street. Following the design stage, a second bond will be necessary to pay for construction. The estimated cost for resurfacing and new signals is approximately $9 million. With a “shovel-ready” design in place, the city will also apply for grants to help pay for construction costs. Instant replay: a 2011 attack on speech by Beth Mason and Tim Occhipinti

ALast September, another attempt in a failed series of efforts was made attacking speech. The target: the Hoboken Zoning Board seat held by Grafix Avenger.  Here’s a short clip of Councilwoman Beth Mason going ballistic as she is not legally permitted to make a prepared attack on a sitting board member from the Council dais.

She’s invited to make her personal attack to the press by Council President Ravi Bhalla as she wishes but without jeopardizing the City with legal exposure.  This enrages Mason who has been tripped up by the law. Read More...

HRPW announces:

We hope you have enjoyed your holiday shortened work week.  Please remember the Hoboken Planning Board meeting to hear the Monarch proposal is =&0=&.  We understand you can be busy over the Summer, but now is the time to act and show your support.  We must send a strong message to both our elected officials and Applied Development that this development is not acceptable.  The larger our crowd, the stronger our message.  Local residents were able to persuade the Hudson County Planning Board to deny this application and we believe the same is possible in the Hoboken Planning Board. We look forward to see you on Tuesday evening.  Please spread the word to your family and friends who live in Hoboken. –Hoboken Residents for a Public Waterfront www.facebook.com/HobokenRPW www.ipetitions.com/petition/hoboken-public-waterfront/ @HobokenRPW on Twitter

Councilman Peter Cunningham poised to step back into Council Presidency

=&0=&

Councilman Peter Cunningham currently serving as the Vice President of the Hoboken City Council is poised to step up to the legislative body’s Council President seat with the annual reorganization slated for Wednesday.

Sources close to the City Council suggest Cunningham is once again undertaking the role in a sensitive period with several of his majority colleagues facing at-large campaigns next spring: Dave Mello, Ravi Bhalla and Carol Marsh.  Should all three seek re-election, the time and energy required juggling the responsibilities of leading the council meetings and managing legislation while running for office is very difficult. Tim Occhipinti: ‘I have some ideas to make law’ or what do we have to do to get that darn Zoning Board Seat from Grafix Avenger?

Hoboken may be heading into the heart of summer where focus on germane government activities is less appealing than a baseball game or enjoying apple pie outdoors with family activities but Tim Occhipinti has other ideas.

The week isn’t even out after celebrating our nation’s founding on July 4th and once again Tim Occhipinti is leading the charge on trashing speech.  As MSV has noted before, he’s rather glib about doing so as we’ve noted here and in City Council:
