Hoboken 2014 Super Bowl Committee begins local business intitiative

The Hoboken Host Committee announces:

The Hoboken Host Committee, an independent initiative spearheaded by members of the community in an effort to optimize
Hoboken’s commercial and tourism appeal in preparation for the
2014 Super Bowl, is pleased to announce the launch of its “Monday
Makeovers” program, beginning July 9 and continuing throughout the summer.
What does a fashion makeover have to do with the Super Bowl?

Committee Chairman Scott Katz says, “The motivation of this committee is to get people actively engaged in events and activities that
emphasize the spirit of cooperation and support found in Hoboken’s business community. With a wide range of terrific shopping
options, the city’s boutiques seem like a great place to start.”

What price independence? And liberty?

The nation celebrates its birthday and if one looks back 236 years ago, the circumstances of its birth are worth more than a minute of reflection.

The signers of the Declaration of Independence did so under duress.  It was considered an act of treason against King George and the penalty was death.  Representatives however from 12 of the 13 colonies voted on this day to go ahead and approve a document declaring a tyranny of dependence on England null and void.

They choose to void security and many of the signers were very highly educated and secure in their standing.  In the face of certain death at the hands of the British crown Benjamin Franklin quipped, “Yes, we must indeed all hang together, or most assuredly we shall all hang separately.” Read More...

I visited the site on June 25 where I saw the collapsed
    southern seawall.

Work had to stop for safety reasons as well as the scope
    of the project changing.
    The project is no longer
    pile restoration. At this
time I do not know a date
    of completion.

    The biggest obstacle in
terms of time has been permitting from the DEP.
I am hopeful that we can
obtain an amended permit rather than having to go through the entire process again.

The City must go out to bid again due to the drastic
    change in the scope of
    the project.

Beware the Ides of …. July

Shakespeare got a lot right when it comes to human nature and of course that’s an understatement.  It’s July and the ides are not March but just as fitting.

In July 2009, Peter Cammarano thought he was on top of the world.  A compliant local media crowned him the kingmaker of Hoboken, Governor Jon Corzine feted him in a celebratory 4th of July party at his million dollar digs on the river and eyes cockily looked beyond Hoboken to Trenton, and Washington.

Unlike Shakespeare’s meticulous labor, Hoboken barely took pause.  Out with the old Old Guard failure and in with the new Old Guard.  The hubris cranked up and the line formed quickly with the fourth ward quickly taking the place of City Hall’s mayor seat like dominoes. Read More...

Tim Occhipinti making more excuses on Southwest Park no vote

Submitted for your approval, the occupant of the 4th ward council seat seeking to repair the damage for reversing his vote for a Southwest Park.

Timmy Occhipinti who has kept silent about his “no” vote for the ramped up negotiations with the possible use of eminent domain to purchase a surface parking lot went on video with Hudson County TV to explain his no vote.

In the video Occhipinti speaks about negotiations being needed without any use of eminent domain.  The City took up the challenge of ramping up negotiations for a Southwest Park with reluctant land owners in the fourth ward after Occhipinti voted for the use of eminent domain in the City Council last year. Showdown: Italia vs. Espana

This afternoon Euro Cup defending champions Spain will face off against Italy in a final for all the marbles in Kiev, Ukraine’s Olympic Stadium.

As if the prize of the championship is not sufficient, history weighs in the balance as well.  Spain is the 2008 Euro Cup and 2010 World Cup defending champion.  A “triple” is unprecedented and now a rising Italy is the last foe standing in their way.

In their opening match in the tournament, the two sides squared off to a 1-1 draw.  Italy demonstrated a willingness to match Spain all over the field.  Today they face an opponent well rested as the tournament schedule has favored Spain. Read More...

Holland and Lincoln Tunnels – click on the image to read more athobokenmuseum.org
If you haven’t seen the Museum’s current exhibition, “Driving Under the Hudson,” you have just one day left! For the rest of the month, the Museum will be installing our next exhibition, “I Belong: A History of Civic and Social Clubs in Hoboken.” We reopen July 29 with a free reception from 2 – 5 pm. “Driving Under the Hudson” This year the Holland Tunnel turns 85, and the Lincoln 75. The Museum invites you to explore the tunnels’ back story and cultural significance in our current Main Gallery exhibition, Driving Under the Hudson, The History of the Holland and Lincoln Tunnels, which will be on view through July 1. Come check out the “catwalk car” on loan from the Port Authority, along with many fascinating historic documents and artifacts that illustrate the struggle it took to build these two engineering marvels.

Thanks to a bitterly cold winter in 1917-1918 that froze the Hudson, followed by a marine workers’ strike the following year, officials in New York and New Jersey quickly mobilized to build the country’s first vehicular under-river tunnel in 1919. Opened in 1927, the Holland Tunnel, named for its chief engineer Clifford Holland, was called the “Eighth Wonder of the World.” It was another decade before the first tube of the Lincoln Tunnel opened, in 1937, and the second and third took another two decades.
