Horse Sense: Councilwoman Mason: ‘It’s the clerks’ fault’

In yet another twist to the week long examination of Councilwoman Mason’s ELEC report from her mayoral campaign last spring, the reporter from Hoboken.patch.com, Andrew Tavani – filed an update with a hollow speculative excuse from a Mason spokesman:

“Patch‘s review of the checks confirmed that all 48 checks in question were in fact issued to individuals, the names and addresses of which can be found in the Itemized List. When asked why the checks were cashed and then cash was disbursed to more than one individual, Mason responded that she didn’t exactly know why that had occurred, noting that as the candidate she relied on others to carry out those types of tasks. But a spokesman speculated that it may have been the result of the way campaign workers interpreted the section on “street money” found on page 28 of ELEC’s Candidate Compliance Manual (PDF). The spokesman, who did not work on the campaign, said the language of the laws governing street money use and the guideline contained in the manual read slightly differently and a layman may have interpreted it to mean that doing so was kosher. They both pointed to the fact that every individual who received money is accounted for by name and address on the Itemized List.”

Just yesterday, MSV questioned the premise issued by a previous Beth Mason spokesperson who stated checks were issued to “families.”  An examination of that claim proved untenable, not lasting a day.  Yesterday’s story highlighted those problems in detail.

The anonymous spokesman here is not even taking a firm position on the shaky ground moving fast under foot for street money being handed out in its most blatant illegal form: cash – blaming unnamed “campaign workers” for the greenbacks being doled out to numerous people who are not itemized by name on a check.  NJ ELEC has already issued a statement indicating these are in fact violations, something Councilwoman Mason’s spokespeople have yet to acknowledge.  In place of that reality staring the 2nd ward councilwoman in the face, she has spokesmen trotting out daily excuses and by day’s end the new story is a heap of rubble replaced with yet a new explanation.

Any examination of the language from page 28 of ELEC’s compliance manual puts further in question Councilwoman Mason’s inability to accept responsibility where she signs on the dotted line.  Look at this language yourself; it’s neither long nor easily misunderstood by any lay person:

NJ State ELEC: ‘Mason violated law’ – Councilwoman clings to claims of innocence citing “clerical error”

In the burgeoning story of ELEC violations, Councilwoman Beth Mason continues to insist on her innocence but the assessment of ELEC violations is all but concluded based on limited revelations of check activity.

Yesterday afternoon, the Jersey Journal posted their story including a comment from the determinative party – ELEC – and it was a straightforward conclusion:

But ELEC officials said today that the Team Mason for One Hoboken report is still in violation of ELEC rules since each worker was not given a check from the campaign account. A spokesman for Mason said that in some cases a number of family members worked on the campaign and one check was issued for all of them. Read More...

HR breaking: We can prove that checks made out to ‘cash’ are clerical error

The Hudson Reporter minutes ago posted an update to their initial story relaying a statement from a Beth Mason spokesman on the dozens of checks listed as “cash” in her ELEC report.

We can prove that checks made out to ‘cash’ are clerical error” is the updated headline and the story relays the claim an accounting firm was behind this mistake even though the final report showing 48 instances of checks made out to “cash” is clearly visible in the general ledger even with a scant review by anyone without any accounting experience!

The Hudson Reporter posted this answer received on how such an “error” could occur:

“We were very surprised to see all those notations saying cash. We have called the accounting firm that prepared the report. They are equally surprised. We don’t know if this was some kind of a mechanical error in the software, or if it was a human error, but they’re accepting responsibility for it and they’re preparing corrected forms for us.”

As to the question of how ingle checks can not only be mislabeled in “error” by the dozens made out to “cash” and simultaneously be accrued to MULTIPLE PEOPLE almost THREE DOZEN TIMES in the same general ledger remains completely baffling.

Below are actual copies from the pages showing anywhere from two, three, four, five even six individuals all credited with the same “cash” check.

For the ELEC entries to meet legal requirements each INDIVIDUAL must show a check made out to them by their respective name! Read More...

Mason claim: 48 "cash" checks a "clerical error"

According to a story posted online by the Hudson Reporter, Councilwoman Beth Mason claims via a spokesman dozens of checks listed as “cash” on her ELEC report are merely “clerical errors.” Her statement then goes on to attack Councilman Ravi Bhalla on his failure to file a BE form as part of ELEC and appears to reignite her charges of the “most blatant conflict” regarding the earlier Condon contract. That report was posted in its entirety here on MSV earlier this week. Read More...

Mason ELEC Report MIA, Absentee fraud?

While we’re on the subject of ELEC reports,  Da Horsey is going to guess many folks have had enough of that chatter, but there’s yet another update landing courtesy of the Wile E. Coyote himself, Eric Kurta who surfaced for just this special occasion.

According to the assembled chart below, it appears Councilwoman Mason’s has not completed the filing for an ELEC report from her joint candidates committee in the mayoral run last spring.  That last ELEC entry was in September 2009. Read More...

Cake Boss Takes Manhattan

The Cake Boss is attracting crowds aside from the usual ones in front of his bake shop in Hoboken. In Manhattan Friday night a small crowd gathered around the Carlo’s Bakery truck at the western themed watering hole, Johnny Utah’s. People were there to watch the Cake Boss, Buddy Valastro, deliver one of his famous cakes. These deliveries serve to cap each episode of the TLC show “Cake Boss.”

The crowd encroached to see the filming and apparently some of the fame is rubbing off on our the town, a little girl was heard correcting her Mother’s pronunciation of Hoboken.  For about fifteen minutes not much seemed to be happening. Buddy took a few pictures with the crowd and the bar’s mascot bull until someone from the show starting shooing them away. At that point a group appeared leading a blindfolded woman into the restaurant, the intended recipient of the cake. Read More...

Mason spokesman: ‘CASH’ Checks – It’s legal

As reported in the Jersey Journal, a Mason spokesman Michael Makraski has come out with a statement on the charges of illegal payments on election day in May stating:

“Paying people to work on election day is legal and must be reported,” Makarski said. “No campaign workers were paid in cash. All campaign workers were paid through a check and =&0=&.”  (Bold emphasis by Da Horsey.) This is what you call in the PR business a typical non-answer answer or in political speak a non-denial denial.  Yes, we know campaign “workers” were paid via check.  But there are all of these folks running around with checks made out to CASH, not by their respective name(s). That’s the ELEC violationby the dozens! In addition, the checks made out to cash attached to the names don’t add up to the amounts made out, again not to their respective names but to CASH.   Michael Makarski, Mason’s spokesman, contends that Bhalla’s statements are completely false and calls the councilman a “clearly incompetent attorney.” The update on the Jersey Journal begins with a blanket denial and quickly devolves into name calling declaring Councilman Bhalla a “clearly incompetent attorney.”  Is that worse than being an incompetent political consultant? See the full report for yourself.  And let’s begin the game of who can best imitate a Wile E. Coyote.  The real one is busy with some important personal business but Da Horsey will get you off to a good start.  Look (or download) the PDF report below and check for all the amounts with the nice words “CASH” on the general ledger page.  Then match them up with the names later in the report to the respective names and amounts.  Add up those amounts to the names and =&6=&.  Better yet, =&7=&
