Public Safety Director Alicea resigns; met with Solomon Dwek twice while council candidate under Peter Cammarano

Office of the Mayor announces:

Statement from Mayor Zimmer Regarding Director Alicea

Yesterday, Public Safety Director Angel Alicea advised me that he had attended two meetings with Solomon Dwek, the confidential informant in Operation Bid Rig. These meetings occurred when he was a candidate for City Council on Peter Cammarano’s ticket in 2009. After the election, Peter Cammarano, with the approval of our State Fiscal Monitor Judy Tripodi, appointed Mr. Alicea to the position of Public Safety Director at a salary of $27,000 per year. Since Mr. Alicea was doing an excellent job in that position, he continued to serve at the same salary in my Administration. Read More...

What Mike Russo really thinks about (his) corruption

Even before he’s fallen, the resurrection of Councilman Mike Russo had begun with a campaign to sully any and all others you could mention in the same sentence as Solomon Dwek.  Even if you appear in the index of “The Jersey Sting,” Beth Mason’s political operatives are willing to put you in the same category as Mike Russo.

Here’s Mike Russo in his own words on a speech he’s crafted, along with other family and friends no doubt.  Listen along and follow the words below the video.  MSV’s words are in brackets.

You will draw some remarkable conclusions.

Beth Mason leads the strategy on moving on from Mike Russo’s corruption

Many people will be fairly unhappy with the rendering of any sense of justice for the betrayal by Mike Russo toward the people of Hoboken.  What makes matters worse is not one of his allies spoke out on the substance of his betrayal, not one of them addressed the seriousness of the underlying transgressions against our community and not one of them asked for him to resign.

Not one.

Here’s Beth Mason trying to put distance between herself and Mike Russo’s obvious “issues,” but note she finds time to suggest we “move on,” and not focus to hard on the serious matters of conspiracy to conduct bribes on behalf of a developer just met, or the takeover of the city government and control all development by “having a supermajority,” as Mike Russo so eloquently put it.

Note how utterly dismissive Beth Mason is of these numerous and serious transgressions and how swiftly she moves on to the Mason-Russo strategy to tarnish others on the City Council and in the mayor’s campaign with unsubstantiated claims others met with Solomon Dwek.

Then ask yourself, is she someone you want in office at all, let alone re-elected in May to the 2nd ward council seat where she can immediately scheme to takeover the whole town and get her hands on the mayor’s office?

/

Talking Ed Note: This is a fascinating case study in bad politics.  In order to garner the good will of the people, you’re suppose to allow them time to digest an apology and offer forgiveness.  Beth Mason will have none of that.  She determines it’s inappropriate for people to hold Mike Russo to account for his ACTIONS, not his braggadocio.

She goes on a tirade pointed at the mayor.  It’s the mayor’s fault for not allowing “both sides,” of the story to appear on the city website.  This from a woman who is working hand in hand with the most vile website in town – Hoboken411.

That website is beneath contempt in its service to her.  Is it even necessary to list the number of people smeared in service to her there, one most recently being her former legislative aide who resigned to take a civil service position?

Does anyone else find it ironic that Beth Mason’s less than democratic temperament towards the public, her colleagues, the executive branch and the institutions of government mirror the iron fist of censorship enforced on behalf of Hoboken411?

Jake Stuiver: ‘I elected to go public on the Beth Mason meeting with Solomon Dwek’

MILE SQUARE VIEW EXCLUSIVE

Jake Stuiver, the 2009 former campaign manager for Beth Mason released a statement on MSV expressing deep concerns on the line of attacks clearly being aired as part of a strategy to discredit people by tying them to FBI informant Solomon Dwek.  This was shown in last night’s City Council meeting using a politicized watered down resolution to reprimand Councilman Russo while pointing at other council members and people in the Administration – all without any evidence.

If Councilwoman Beth Mason wishes to substantiate such charges, MSV will print it.  However, it’s unlikely she will do so, instead choosing to use paid political operatives and Hoboken411 to do it for her.

Jake Stuiver’s remarks appear below:

Rami for Council announces:

=&0=& =&1=& I, along with over 50 other Hoboken residents, rallied for the removal of Councilman Russo on the steps of City Hall yesterday. While we are happy that Russo stepped down as Council Vice President and Chair of the Revenue and Finance Committee, the Council Majority’s continued effort to close ranks and protect their political ally shows a complete disregard for the public interest. First, replacing Councilman Russo with 4th Ward Councilman Tim Occhipinti as Vice President is like replacing one crook with another. The FBI surveillance video of Councilman Russo raised serious questions about his campaign finance reporting because the $10,000 offered by the informant was well above the $2,600 political donation cap and would have needed to be funneled through other channles to prevent too many red flags. How many other donations did Russo launder this way? How many meetings with developers went exactly like this one, but ended with Russo taking the money? We know for a fact that 4th Ward Councilman Tim Occhipinti launders any money he can get by passing it through various channels. That’s how Councilwoman Mason laundered the $13,000 in contributions she gave to 4th Ward Councilman Tim Occhipinti during the November special election. 4th Ward Councilman Tim Occhipinti is still under investigation by the Attorney General for using all Mason’s donations and tens of thousands of dollars from other real estate developers for massive voter fraud. How is that an improvement over Councilman Russo as Council Vice President? It is the same unethical, and potentially criminal, behavior. Second, the Council Majority’s actions reek of a conspiracy to give political cover to Councilman Russo so they can continue with politics as usual. If Councilman Russo did nothing illegal, then why did he step down without asking anyone to review the facts? If he has nothing to hide, then why did the Council Majority refuse to investigate themselves? Why was Russo allowed to vote on the resolution which was clearly a conflict of interest for him? The answer is obvious: there must have been some criminal activity afoot, but since the Council Majority cannot withstand the loss of even one member, they organized a political coverup. They try to make it look like they are taking action by removing Russo’s honorary titles of VP and Revenue and Finance Chair, give the titles to other political cronies like 4th Ward Councilman Tim Occhipinti, and immediately change the subject so they don’t have to conduct their own investigation. The Council Majority is clearly more interested in self preservation and self interest than in the public interest. The residents of the 4th Ward are not well represented by Councilman Occhipinti and his allies. If the Council Majority continues to refuse to police themselves, then we, the people of Hoboken, must vote them out of office on May 10th.

Mayor Zimmer: ‘Council whitewashed Mike Russo’s corrupt behavior’

Office of the Mayor announces:

MAYOR ZIMMER’S STATEMENT ON COUNCIL MAJORITY’S ACTION REGARDING COUNCILMAN RUSSO
Councilman Russo has broken the people’s trust. His removal as Chair of the Finance Committee and resignation as Vice President of the Council were appropriate, but did not go far enough to renew the people’s trust.

Instead of recognizing the seriousness of Councilman Russo’s actions, the Council majority tried to minimize the significance of the fact that the Councilman tried to generate campaign contributions in exchange for expediting development rights.  Read More...

Mike Russo: sorry, well sorta

Mike Russo showed an uncharacteristic sheepish side tonight watching a completely packed audience dissect his every move and in the end he delivered a performance art speech worthy of a Greek tragedy except it’s Hoboken that’s the victim.

His political mea culpa consisted of losing his honorary title of VP, the title a designation he earned only last January when the midnight power grab from the end of 2010 had gone into effect.  In a surprise, it was learned during public portion Mike Russo also lost his role as chair of the Budget and Finance Subcommittee.  This only surfaced during former Councilman Mike Lenz’s remarks when he was critical of the lack of action by the council. Grist for the Mill: Mike Russo out in Finance

A source, no where near the quality of Grafix Avenger’s Deep Uvula says Mike Russo will resign as chair of the budget and finance committee. If he wants to make it voluntary, he’ll need to move quick. Yesterday his two year marriage to Councilwoman Beth Mason ended when after more than a week of sitting quietly and uttering not a word on the revelations of his sit down with FBI informant Solomon Dwek accepting his offer of multiple illicit payments, she threw him under the Hop.

On the surveillance tapes, Russo voiced support for Beth Mason for mayor but said his support came with a price – his selection of all three council candidates on the slate and control of six votes on the nine member council. Read More...
