Sign of the Times: Corporation Counsel Mark Tabakin is on the front line

An interesting development in Hoboken’s latest front with the Old Guard attempting a pincer movement against the Mayor’s Administration is the arena of lawsuits.  As some have noted in comments here and elsewhere, Hoboken’s historically been a target rich environment.  The mother of all legal battles is set for Wednesday in a special meeting of the City Council.

MSV has noted a concerted effort to undermine the legal office then to highlight the number of outstanding cases against the City pointing to the Zimmer Administration as the cause.  A coordinated effort found its way into a Hudson Reporter story last December but MSV declined to air that political operation here.  Costs without context is not a story. Al Arezzo to City: %&*) off!

Al Arezzo is gone but not forgotten.  At least his memory lives on in the minds of City Council meetings where his name was reverently mentioned along with his untimely departure and lawsuit against the City of Hoboken Wednesday night.

During a discussion on the legal work required, an exasperated Corporation Counsel Mark Tabakin responded to the obstructive complaints from MORTe he should plan better by responding, “Then stop getting sued.”

Councilwoman Terry Castellano decided this was a good time to note the former employees who are suing the City.  (As one commenter noted recently, that’s been a cottage industry in Hoboken for decades.) Read More...

A proposed science themed Charter School asks for feedback

Proposed Science-Themed Charter School Seeks Community Input:

A team of Hoboken parents and educators is putting together a proposal for a new, science-themed charter school for Hoboken. As part of this process, they are reaching out to the community to gauge interest and seek input. The survey is available online at http://davincicharter.wordpress.com/community-survey/.  All Hoboken residents are encouraged to fill it out. Some brief information about the proposed school: (1) If approved, DaVinci Charter School of Hoboken will open in September 2013 with Kindergarten – 2nd grade, and will expand to K-5. (2) DaVinci will be a S.T.E.M.-focused school – Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. In addition to receiving high-quality instruction in reading and writing and all core subjects, students will participate several times a week in hands-on science experiments and engineering projects. (3) DaVinci will offer a small, nurturing, and personal community where every child is known. (4) DaVinci believes in adapting our teaching to the individual child – not the other way around. (5) The curriculum will be Project Based. This means that students will learn largely through working on real-life-related, engaging, and often interdisciplinary projects that are connected to rigorous academic standards. Get your Irish on – Hoboken style!

City of Hoboken announces:

=&0=& =&1=&=&2=& Following the unfortunate cancellation of the Hoboken St. Patrick’s Day Parade, a number of residents volunteered to work with the City of Hoboken to organize a grassroots celebration of Irish-American culture with the aim of providing a variety of entertainment for the entire community to enjoy. The first of what is planned to be an annual Hoboken Irish Cultural Festival will be held on Wednesday, March 14 from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Sinatra Park on Hoboken’s scenic waterfront. The event will feature Irish sport, dance, music, and food and is free and open to all ages. Proceeds from concessions will go to the Hoboken Shelter and Hoboken American Legion. “I thank our residents who took the initiative to lead this event, and I invite all of our community to come enjoy and experience Irish culture,” said Mayor Dawn Zimmer. “With the Hoboken St. Patrick’s Day Parade recently cancelled, as an Irish-American Hobokenite, I have to say I was saddened,” said Chris Halleron, a lead organizer of the event. “Upon hearing the news, I immediately reached out to Lea Simone, Marc Gianotti, and Scott Katz — who run The Pier Sessions, which is an ongoing concert series at the Shipyard Marina. Their model of a grassroots community concert with proceeds going to charity really established the framework for this event. In running this idea past Hoboken’s City Hall, they were immediately supportive and enthusiastic, so we joined forces to produce the event at Sinatra Park.” The event will kick-off at 4 pm at the Little League Field with a demonstration of the Gaelic sport of Hurling from theHoboken Guards, the city’s GAA (Gaelic Athletic Association) affiliated hurling squad—now entering their second season. Following the scrimmage, a youth clinic will be held for anyone interested in learning more about this fast-paced Irish pastime. Entertainment will start at 6 p.m with a performance by the Traditional Irish Step Dancers from The Garden Street School of the Performing Arts (1018 Washington Street, 201-683-7078. =&12=& will follow with an acoustic set from Hoboken Irish-American artist Will O’Connor. MSV wishes to apologize..

There’s been a rash of trolling along with a technical glitch where many posters were getting caught in a filter so their post did not make it into the comments section.

It’s somewhat ironic those posts were picked up by the system even as “Steve” has joined us today with his rather lowbrow trolling.  He/they must have MSV confused with Hoboken411.  For the lowbrow slightly veiled anti-Semitic trolling, you need to go that way.  >>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Council Meeting shoots down emergency appropriation, fights over non-binding resolution on BoE law passed Tuesday

The City Council meeting went into the usual partisan mode when $600K in emergency appropriations were presented and shot down by MORTe.  Agreement on the items was itself impossible with the lack of basic agreement on when the items were even presented.

Corporation Counsel Mark Tabakin attempted to explain how an emergency required action on the items presented and  MORTe went into pedantic detail questioning up and down a list of more than two dozen items – many surrounding important legal work such as opposing the Monarch project and paying Hoboken firefighters.
