Fire closes 1st street at Jackson and Monroe

City of Hoboken announces: =&0=& =&0=& =&2=& This morning a fire started at a two-story structure near the corner of 1st Street and Jackson Street. The building was safely evacuated, and firefighters are on the scene to control the fire.

Residents are advised that 1st Street between Jackson Street & Monroe Street will be closed to traffic and pedestrians for several hours and may use Observer Highway as an alternative. The building is an older wooden structure and the fire is generating significant smoke, so residents in the area are advised to keep windows closed.

MyFox NY stifles dissent on Hoboken parking story

Although there’s question if MyFox NY reporter Joel Waldman is currently living on lower Willow or renting out the property, there’s no question MYFox NY has deleted the entire comments thread on its Hoboken parking story. In the usual soporific fare making local TV news unwatchable to this viewer, the segment is a production designed to offer only a limited view of parking in Hoboken with staged shots of motorists “reacting” to a boot on the vehicle while limiting perspectives of actual Hoboken residents, the proverbial other side of the parking coin. MyFox NY joins Hoboken411 and the unsuccessful Occupy Hoboken Parking page in trying to control which views on the issue can be expressed.   MSV has suggested if the decade old signs are seen as problematic, a quick inexpensive correction can be made.  Stickers posted diagonal should be put on every sign relating to the four hour visitor limit on the streets with “citywide” ensuring there is no misunderstanding. Would that fix the problem?  No, that’s a limited resolution for a less than logical reason.  In the end, people who have been able to skirt the system wish to continue to do so.  Some will argue the four hour limit should apply to only one space and there’s other emotional, illogical complaints to allow parking in bus stops and other spots posing a safety risk. None of this is new to Hoboken but if the policy generates sufficient discussion to merit alternative policy ideas to make it easier for visitors to park in Hoboken there’s venues and avenues for such a review.   What is currently under review is a limited revision on the yellow lines on some corners and Councilman Peter Cunningham stated recovering limited spaces which will not be detrimental to vision and emergency vehicle access is possible when it’s completed. That’s been going on for some months and in the end may free up some additional spaces.  Public safety however will not change as the leading indicator in the review.
Moving Violations are a concern in town
too, not just the usual parking complaints.
MSV believes parking is not the only issue with vehicles in town.  Moving violations are occurring with greater frequency and the police department could play an important role in getting “word out” it’s unacceptable.   There was a time when a show of force would be made at 11th Street and other locations when cars would blow parking signs.  It’s been a long time since that’s been witnessed.   Perhaps Public Safety Director Jon Tooke can add this to his wish list.

Update: Hoboken resident voices have moved to the first MyFox NY Hoboken parking story and wouldn’t you know it, prosbus has emerged in an attempt to counter the truth about real Hoboken residents expressing their views with more of the old political operative act he’s infamous for over at Hoboken411.

Fox5 Reporter Joel Waldman a Hoboken resident?

Joel Waldman – a Mason tool?

The TV report isn’t a day past on Fox5’s “follow up” report on the Hoboken parking and questions are starting to come up around the impetus behind the story.

MSV’s commenters a battle tested, intellectually rigorous bunch may have uncovered some useful information.  The first issue is did Joel Waldman report on this story as part of a real investigation even as it looks like he is a Hoboken resident himself?  If so, how long has he resided in Hoboken and why was a story on parking chosen to be done at this time? Fox5 News takes another shot at Hoboken parking

MyFox NY did a “follow up” report on Hoboken parking in the typical heavy handed TV news production style interviewing a number of people who received parking tickets and sitting down with Councilwoman Beth Mason.

Splicing parts from its earlier report, it painted a picture of a city using parking enforcement to make up for a bad economy and cited the increased ticketing from the previous year showing ticket revenues up almost 20%.

Mason noted she’s been contacted by constituents on parking which is interesting in that she’s rather infamous for ignoring people who attempt to contact her on issues in the Second Ward as one resident who attempted to do on the Monarch project and later complained about being ignored in a letter to the Hudson Reporter. APPLE STORE COMING TO HOBOKEN IN 2012?

An ad on Craigslist looking for high end retail managers suggests there’s an Apple Store in Hoboken’s future.  The unverified ad claims an Apple Store will be opening by the middle of next year at the former location of Blockbuster, 412 Washington Street.

The Bokenonline earlier posted a story last August saying after a Halloween pop up store occupied the former Blockbuster space, a woman oriented chain Anthropologie would be following.  At the time of this writing, MSV did not have a chance to confirm details with the Bokenonline but would note it’s far more accurate and reliable than Hoboken411 where facts aren’t required in a story. Ex-mayor Anthony Russo lawsuit against BoE thrown out

=&0=& =&1=& =&1=&

A lawsuit by former mayor and convicted felon Anthony Russo against the Hoboken Board of Education claiming health related damages due to asbestos was dismissed in court late last month.

The suit claimed Russo suffered damages over a three year period when he was a teacher from 1990 – 1993 and attributed cancer due to the removal of asbestos.

The Superior Court of NJ ruled the statute of limitations had passed and dismissed the case noting:
In light of our holding, we need not address Russo’s other arguments regarding the need for expert testimony as to causation. We only add that there is no requirement that the WCJ consider expert testimony before granting a motion to dismiss based on the statute of limitations. See N.J.A.C. 12:235-3.5(c)(“motions shall be disposed of on the papers, unless a Judge of Compensation directs oral argument or further proceedings”). Read More...

Beth Mason informs BA Liston, “I write my own stuff”

At last week’s council meeting there were some real gems but this one between a fed up Business Administrator who is sitting next to a pile of about 1,000 pages of information doled out to the self-proclaimed council minority in order to facilitate a simple end of year line item transfer leads to some classic council moments.

After much back and forth mostly between Councilman Michael Russo the turn to take a shot and play the gotcha game with the Business Administrator Arch Liston falls to Councilwoman Beth Mason.  She’s eager to play but doesn’t begin with any question.  Instead she whines about being kept in the dark and Liston interjects saying he is happy to answer questions and invites Mason to submit the questions in advance of the meeting “as other council members do.” Read More...
