MORTe action on funding City’s operations “arbitrary and capricious”

At the City Council Wednesday night, a discussion on the emergency appropriation saw comment by the Corporation Counsel that evening Melissa Longo.  She explained why MORTe’s attempt in the meeting to present limited funding for the City’s operations while the annual budget is under consideration is “arbitrary and capricious.”

While she’s explaining the foolhardiness of selectively choosing to make payments to one segment of public safety while ignoring paying City employee medical insurance, trash pickup and other related city services, attempts to interrupt her thoughts are fended off. Read More...

Hoboken Irish Cultural Festival extends invitation to residents

=&0=& =&0=& =&0=& =&3=& Dear Editor: As a 15-year resident of Hoboken, I have watched our St. Patrick’s Day celebration become more and more complicated—over the span of several City administrations. When this year’s Parade was cancelled I was disappointed, but more so by the events that led to the decision. When I set about coordinating the =&4=&, my intention was to create an event that serves as a placeholder, not a replacement for the Parade. From the perspective of a writer, bartender and now a father as well, I understand the importance of the Parade while recognizing the need to mitigate the unruly behavior that has unfortunately become associated with it. At first glance, it’s hard to see tens of thousands visitors to our city as a bad thing—until you see what has been left in their wake over the years. It is now apparent that Hoboken can expect this crowd on the first Saturday of March, with or without the Parade. Nevertheless, if we work together to properly manage that crowd, I’m confident it can be handled to the optimum benefit of the common good. We have a year to set about doing that. I sincerely hope the =&4=& is the first step in that direction, and I look forward to incorporating future events with a restored Parade celebration. I am exceedingly grateful for the City’s enthusiastic support of the =&4=&. Furthermore, after a phone conversation last week, I’m appreciative of =&7=& member =&8=& recognition of the merit of this event. I’m also grateful to the members of the =&9=& who have come forward to lend their support for this event. The inaugural =&10=&will be held =&11=& on Hoboken’s scenic waterfront. The event will kick-off with a demonstration of the =&12=& by the=&13=&Hoboken Guards, the city’s GAA (Gaelic Athletic Association) affiliated hurling squad—now entering their second season. Following the scrimmage, a youth clinic will be held for anyone interested in learning more about this fast-paced Irish pastime. =&15=& will join the festivities from The Garden Street School of the Performing Arts (1018 Washington Street, 201-683-7078). =&17=& will start with an acoustic set from Hoboken Irish-American artist Will O’Connor. Dublin’s=&13=&George Murphy later takes the stage, delivering a gritty set of traditional Irish seisún music. Finally, New Jersey’s=&13=&Paddy and the Pale Boys take the stage, performing their own hard-charging, uniquely styled Irish-American sound. The event is =&23=&

City introduces $102 million 2012 budget

The 2012 Hoboken budget passed 9-0 on introduction last night, coming in at $102,360,982, a decrease of about $3.6 million from 2011.

Short strokes:

Taxes are down slightly from the prior year, basically flat.  The available surplus in cash is about $4.1 million with a target of maintaining a similar ballpark figure going into 2013.

60% of the budget goes to salaries.
MSV is trying to obtain the full electronic details of the budget and will look to post it later Thursday.

Remind you of anyone?

Talking Ed Note: Tax reduction?  MORTe succeeded in their sabotage last year flushing down the tubes $4 million in a potential refinance of the midtown garage.  Some of those savings could have gone to tax relief. Read More...

City Council: Intro to the budget, food truck ordinance on tap

Well away we go as the new budget is to be introduced at tonight’s City Council meeting.  MSV is not privy to any of it and there’s not been time to even try but that will all end tonight and we get to see how Mayor Zimmer tackles one of the biggest if not thee biggest annual challenge.  (Saving the hospital doesn’t count as that was a one time event.)

So it’s off to the races and the grandstanding which will be in plentiful supply – if not tonight then almost every day thereafter.  MORTe who has tried to bankrupt Hoboken by sabotaging the hospital sale will suddenly be crowing about saving taxpayers money for weeks on end. Read More...

Hoboken411 – Fugitive from The Law

Hoboken411 sputters on while Perry Klaussen is on the lam with a warrant out for his arrest.  One commenter urges MSV readers to go out and track down the fugitive while another notes he may have conveniently skipped town.

No matter, Hoboken411 is still posting it’s typical fare of inane material about garbage bags stacked up outside a business before pickup and attacking a private citizen and Hoboken resident by name not even up for a job at City Hall.  Hey, all in a normal day for “Krazy Shorts” Klaussen. Next steps in the waterfront battle vs. the Monarch Project

Hoboken Residents for a Public Waterfront announce:

We were thrilled to hear from many of you after announcing our victory at the Hudson County Planning Board.  Unfortunately, the fight continues as Shipyard Associates has the ability to appeal the county planning board’s decision.  Here are some updates from Hoboken Residents for a Public Waterfront. 1. The Hoboken Planning Board meeting to hear the Monarch application has been rescheduled to April 3, 2012.  Shipyard Associates has requested this delay to respond to concerns raised by the planning board’s planner and engineer.  We will provide further information when it becomes available.  This meeting is still very important and one of our best opportunities to be heard.  We sincerely hope that these postponements do not undermine the significance of Hoboken residents attendance. 2. Fund for a Better Waterfront posted two great articles on their website last week.  We wanted to share them with you: http://betterwaterfront.org/?page_id=1590 and http://betterwaterfront.org/?page_id=1579 3. We are looking for a graphic designer to assist us in creating a newspaper ad to further spread our message.  Please email us back if you or someone you know would be willing to volunteer their time. Thank you again for all your support. Sincerely, Hoboken Residents for a Public Waterfront
