Andrew Amato honored with “Amato’s Way” Street

City of Hoboken announced:

CITY TO DEDICATE FIRST & ADAMS STREETS AREA AS “AMATO’S WAY”

City of Hoboken, February 17th, 2010 – Hoboken Mayor Dawn Zimmer said the City will dedicate the First and Adams streets area as “Amato’s Way” in honor of the late City Councilman Andrew Amato, who passed away at age 78 on February 4th.

“Andrew Amato was an integral part of Hoboken’s social and political fabric for decades,” said Mayor Zimmer. “I’ve asked the City Council to designate the street as ‘Amato’s Way’ in honor of his lifetime of public service to our City and his dedication to our residents.” Read More...

Special Meeting – Hospital Board on Thursday

Thursday the Hoboken University Medical Center will be having a budget workshop for the public led by its board: the Hoboken Municipal Hospital Authority.  Following the two held for the city the past two Saturdays, the Authority will have a budget report presented before going into a closed session to review contract and employment issues.

As part of the special meeting, a public comment portion will be available.  There’s been a lot said about the hospital in recent days from the Governor’s transition team predicting its closure in December and the CEO’s reply rejecting that characterization.  In a recent phone discussion with Mile Square View, CEO Spiros Hatiras stated Governor Christie is now fully aware and supportive of the numerous steps the hospital has taken to improve its financial viability. Mayor Zimmer: The Comprehensive Interview pt. 5


In the final segment part 5, more questions on infrastructure and parks across the town is discussed and also how the public can better stay informed on the developments on any number of projects via the City website on a monthly basis.  The City website is mentioned also as part of an overhaul to add municipal data, contracts, etc.

In part four efficiency and privatization questions with the Hoboken Library as a possible candidate, a pilot program for school vouchers, Councilman Ravi Bhalla’s proposal to move elections to November, and dual office holding for elected positions.

The question on being elected to multiple positions leads to a broader discussion on potential conflicts of interests and how this has been addressed in a most recent City Hall hire.

This portion of the interview continues with yet more on taxes and a question on suspending the Open Space portion, accounting treatment for the critical area of the $4.2MM pension problem inherited from the error with the State under the Roberts Administration and also limited highlights on the plan for the Municipal Garage.

The next big area is the question of the fiscal state monitor’s plan for the Police Department announced last spring.  MSV then asks about the reval, one of the biggest issues among existing homeowners in town.  Town Hall meetings and a quarterly timeline is mentioned with the mayor’s view on following through on that promise. In this first part of the audio interview Thursday afternoon at City Hall, Mayor Dawn Zimmer begins on the challenge of moving from a legislator to executive, the “crises after crises” when she became Acting Mayor and the efforts on transparency in the hiring process and obtaining the police audit.

There’s a full day of activity at City Hall today in the second part of the Budget Workshop.  Most people will spend the day doing any number of things but you can always come back and watch as you like via the magic of internet streaming courtesy of our technical friends running the cameras.  Their doing a good job of capturing the players in action.  Watch how the first Finance/Administration portion is hijacked from budget to arguments about the critical statistical data of gnat fly reproduction and the wails of pain how every year another council person asks for this and that and dee odder thing and yet it never happens. State to Mayor: You Win!

In an extensive interview with Mayor Zimmer Thursday, MSV learned the State will release the final Police Audit.

No exact timing was given, but a senior official, Lori Grifa, Acting Commissioner of the Department of Community Affaris only in her third day, contacted the mayor yesterday afternoon and stated the report is a high priority.  This ends the ongoing inquiry about a half-hour before the MSV City Hall interview took place yesterday.

Horse Sense: The State of NJ vs. Hoboken

It’s not an actual legal case on a New Jersey docket but perhaps it well could be in the near future.  There’s a split at City Hall between the elected representatives and the state fiscal monitor Judy Tripodi.  It’s been brewing for quite a while unseen by most and unknown to all but a handful of union and City Hall insiders.  MSV has heard merely whispers here and there but really if you pay attention, some of it has come out in the public square and you can read between the lines.
