An emergency City Council meeting has been called for tomorrow night, Tuesday, August 10th at 7:00 regarding the sale of the municipal garage. The Council will be briefed by the City’s environmental and legal professionals, and requested to conduct deliberations in closed session due to the potential for litigation between SHG (Hekemian) and the City of Hoboken. Reader exchange on Hoboken Police Department layoffs

This last week brought Hoboken Police Department’s announced layoffs to the fore.  One commenter, Frank posted some questions and concerns and MSV is highlighting it in a post as the issue merits evaluation and discussion.

Mr. SmartyJones

As for the audit, can you explain to me the breakdown Mr. Maplewood Chief recommended?

First, the current ratio is 3.3 to 1 which is the recommended ratio, the auditer recommended the same number of supervisor reduction they are currently implementing and also a reduction of patrol officers to 60-70 reducing the ratio to 2.1 to 1, how can that be good? It doesn’t make any sense. That goes against every Law Enforcement Management book ever written, he should know that as a former Chief of Police.  Read More...

4th Ward Council Candidate Tim Occhipinti on police department layoffs

Tim Occhipinti issued a statement on the recently announced police layoffs.

Recently the state gave Mayor Dawn Zimmer approval to proceed with significant cutbacks within the Hoboken Police Department, resulting in the termination and demotion of 37 officers. While we all recognize the need for fiscal responsibility, I have concerns that these cuts can pose a significant threat to the safety and security of the citizens of Hoboken.=&0=&

Things are tough all over…

With the bad news on the job front, unemployment in double digits and NJ faring no better than many parts of the country, the impact is really being felt.  Hoboken too is feeling the squeeze and it’s not only in the private sector with municipal and police layoffs recently approved by the State this past week.

Let’s try to bear in mind that even in tough times, Hoboken is still one community. Voices rise in bitterness seeking to enflame divisions, using the economic times for political advantage. Those voices can be expected to grow louder as yet another election kicks into full gear this fall for the 4th ward City Council seat. Read More...

Getting out of dodge but where do I put the car?

So you are heading down with friends to the Jersey Shore or flying out to another locale and need to find a spot to leave your car to avoid street cleaning?  The City has come up with a plan to save you time and trouble and perhaps some money too.

While off at your vacation spot: Residents who are planning time away from Hoboken and usually park on-street can avoid street cleaning tickets or the hassle of asking friends/family members to move their cars by keeping their car in the city’s Garage B on Hudson Street (6th Floor) up to 14 days per year. Twitterific!

Mayor Zimmer posted an early twitter at sunrise this morning and it sounds rather ominous:

Sitting on my deck watching the sun rise and drafting an apology letter. I am disappointed in some actions by others.

Although it’s not clear what this is in reference to, a blind guess it may have something to do with announcements related to municipal layoffs.  Da Horsey really has no idea on this one.  But if the mayor is disappointed in someone and writing an apology letter…not good.

Update:  The mayor issued another twitter today explaining the first:

I apologized in letter to employees because they should not have learned details of the layoff plan on the internet due to release by state

=====

Which leads us to a reader submittal yesterday noting the final twitter posted by Peter Cammarano as mayor:

I would like to thank everyone today for the birthday wishes, hope everyone had a great time at the opening night for St. Ann’s feast

The next morning at around 6:00 am, the FBI was knocking on his door for their sweep in Operation Bid Rig.

What does it all mean?  Twitter ain’t just for kicks.

Update: Some people are questioning the time to serve and it appears that the full 24 months will have to be served as there is no reduction time in the Federal system. However, a request has been made that Peter serve his time in Lewisburg, PA. *
======

As anticipated, Peter Cammarano was sentenced to 24 months in Newark Federal Court earlier today. He surrenders to serve his sentence for extortion on September 20th.

After Peter Cammarano serves his prison sentence, he’ll then be under supervisory probation for an additional two years. He’s no longer holding a NY law license and his NJ license is suspended and should be revoked with his felony conviction soon.
