Hoboken cultural affairs official and activist Tom Olivieri passes at 75

HFHA announces:

The Hoboken Fair Housing Association (HFHA) mourns the loss of Tom Olivieri, 75, who passed away on Thursday night.  As a long-time tenants’ rights activist, Tom was well-known and loved by supporters of rent protections in Hoboken.  Tom served the City of Hoboken as Tenant Advocate and later as a cultural affairs official. He retired in 2001.

Tom was long at the center of cultural and civic activities in Hoboken’s broad-ranging Hispanic Community including the fighting of the wide-spread displacement of poor residents during the 1970s.  Tom continued to be active in the fight against displacement and in support of maintaining rent protections as a key participant in the HFHA campaign against a ballot question intended to severely weaken rent protections that appeared on the Hoboken ballot in 2012 and 2013.  Tom will be sorely missed.

A funeral mass will be offered on June 10 at 10:00 am at Our Lady of Grace Church, Hoboken.  His burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, No. Arlington. Visiting at The Lawton-Turso Funeral Home 633 Washington St., Hoboken, Sunday/Monday 2:00-4:00 and 7:00-9:00 both days.

Das Boot heads to Das Committee

Last night the resolution brought by Councilwoman Castellano and Beth Mason was tabled and moved to the parking subcommittee in a party line 5-4 vote.

The action was taken on introduction on a motion by City Council President Jen Giattino. While it moves to the appropriate subcommittee, Councilman Peter Cunningham stated a meeting will take place among its members next Thursday. The resolution sponsors were invited.

The boot gets to live for another day as is. However, there is indications of changes where a combination of methods to handle parking offenses will impact the boot and the tow. Read More...

Boot on the blink bringing back the hook and tow up to bat in City Council @ 7:00

Broadcast live streaming video on Ustream

A resolution for eliminating the boot in Hoboken and bringing back the old reliable tow truck will be on tap tonight in the City Council.

Of course all you’re hearing about is the boot which neglects the actual language changes in the resolution MSV highlighted earlier this week.

So enjoy the little game of politics as there’s not much likely to be resolved when playing politics is the ultimate objective.

Tonight that’s likely we’re all going to see. Read More...

Sanford-Conrad Majority for the Republican Committee salute their supporters!

Sanford-Conrad Majority for Hoboken Republican Committee announces:
Dear Friends and Neighbors,

Thank you!  We did it!  The Sanford-Conrad Team won a citywide majority of Republican committee seats last Tuesday.  Our campaign for leadership of the Hoboken Republican Party is almost complete.  Next week the Sanford-Conrad Majority will select new leaders.  I look forward to serving as Chair of the Hoboken Republican Party.  And, I know Ted is just as excited to serve as Vice-Chair too!  Thank you for the opportunity and ability to serve.

Our citywide victory does not merely represent the changing of the guard; it is also a validation of both a new philosophy and a new leadership style.  Our team’s goal was to bring more Republicans into the political process and together we did that by electing a majority.  We won because a campaign focused on outreach, communication, and organization prevailed.  On Election Day more people chose the Sanford-Conrad Team.

Our team also showed how new leadership can overcome the “politics as usual” that turns off the majority of Republicans.  We won with a positive agenda.  We did not tear down others; we built others up into future leaders of our party.  Thank you for keeping an open mind and allowing us to share our vision of a brighter future for the Hoboken Republican Party.

As your leader you can expect much from me.  I asked for the responsibility and you gave that privilege to me.  Winning an election is not the end; it is a beginning.  We are men of action and will lead the Republican Party accordingly.   You elected the Sanford-Conrad Majority to act on the positive agenda we ran on.

That is why I ask my fellow Republicans to unite with our majority so that we may move forward together.  As your leader I will ask for your help.  I will call you for your advice.  The challenges confronting our party in a stronghold like Hudson County are immense.  We must not shoot ourselves in the foot if there is any hope for Republicans to secure a foothold in Hoboken.

We are at a crossroads and in moments such as these I often think of better words that speak to our better selves.  “When I was child I thought as a child, I spoke as a child, I acted as a child, but when I became a man I put away those childish things.”

Thank you for the honor of running for Chair of the Hoboken Republican Party.

Sincerely,

James Sanford
Hoboken Republican Committee Chair Nominee

Beth Mason and Richard Mason of Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz come in with late money for Freeholder Romano

The election is over and a commenter earlier said Freeholder Stick Romano was outspent 10-1. Well, let’s just say that’s preposterous based on the campaigns run by both sides.

Each put out its message in multiple mailers and had people out working to engage the voters. The turnout was lower than many would like but that’s besides the point now. Whoever has the most legal certified votes is declared the winner and that’s not in doubt.

Full campaign reports will be available soon but but both sides spent in the tens of thousands on this pivotal Freeholder race. Read More...

Low turnout in Freeholder race hits incumbent Anthony “Stick” Romano

While the Old Guard managed to chalk up a win for Freeholder Anthony “Stick” Romano yesterday, the low turnout is evident in comparison to his unopposed race three years back.

Of course in that race, Stick was the Hudson County Democratic Organization (HCDO) candidate and even better he dueled solely against “personal choice” – out and out protest write in votes.

In that primary, he was able to generate nearly 4,000 votes himself. Yesterday, the turnout for the primary was less than 4,000 overall. Read More...

Reform wilts in late afternoon rain and Old Guard Anthony “Stick” Romano coasts to primary win

=&0=& =&1=& =&1=& =&1=& =&4=&

In a spring election battle the chance to take the Reform message of fiscal responsibility, accountability and lower taxes to Hudson County flopped.

Or =&5=& Anthony “Stick” Romano, the “name brand” the Old Guard rallied around asked Old Hoboken to unite again under the banner of “Our Town.” It worked to a rather predictable effect generating the solid 2,000 – 2,200 votes they typically muster in a spring election. Someone must have forgotten to tell Stick Romano he also represents parts of Jersey City. The dog whistle however was heard loud and clear in Hoboken’s subsidized group of buildings: Church Towers, the senior buildings and Marine View. Reform showed the value in obtaining higher turnout November elections. That earlier enthusiastic endorsement by voters in a referendum revealed its downside; a spring primary is a real problem and engaging voters on the first summer like day of the year and late rush hour rain proved insurmountable. All of this in the end was a detriment for Phil Cohen who worked very hard and got the message out with an active Mayor Dawn Zimmer campaigning. It proved not enough in a spring Democrat primary.

The final official tally:

DEM – Freeholder 5th District
55/55 100.00%
Vote Count Percent
Philip H. COHEN 4A 1,534 40.39%
Anthony L. ROMANO 4B 2,150 56.61%
Adela Rohena SANTIAGO 4C 111 2.92%
Personal Choice 3 0.08%
Total 3,798 100.00%

As Grafix Avenger’s one of a kind Old Guard soldier Deep Uvula said back in the spring of 2011 leading into the City Council ward elections:
For certain, every one of us will vote. You sure as shit can’t say that about “reformers”.  If it is a nice day, they’ll be too busy playing Frisbee at Pier A with their dogs and if it is raining, they’ll stay in their cardboard condos with a mocha frappy something that they had effing delivered.
Yesterday, Reform saw a perfect storm of both.
Celebratory balloons up at the Anthony “Stick” Romano HQ last night. His Freeholder win was celebrated
on his Facebook page not as a county win covering Hoboken and Jersey City but a “town” victory.
Romano embraced the Old Guard maxim “This is our town.”
Talking Ed Note: What’s going to be felt most strongly today and for some time is the missed opportunity. Difference in this election was about 300 Vote by Mail votes and another 300 citywide. Read More...

Phil Cohen officially concedes, “We came up a little short”

Cohen for Freeholder

From the Phil Cohen for Freeholder campaign:

In case you haven’t heard, I wanted to tell you the news: we fell a little short tonight. While I hoped that we would win, we have a lot to be proud of.
Our campaign spoke to thousands of voters, and engaged hundreds of supporters here in Hoboken and Jersey City. Many of you gave donations, time, tweets, and phone calls.  I am grateful for all that you have done to support our campaign.
Even though we fell short, we were a campaign with powerful ideas and a vision for a County that is more accountable to Hoboken and Jersey City residents. We stood up for fairer taxes, for fiscal responsibility, and for a County Government that works for us. I will not stop fighting; I hope you won’t either.
A few moments ago, I spoke with Anthony Romano, congratulated him on a hard-fought campaign, and conceded defeat. I look forward to working with Freeholder Romano to ensure that Hudson County works for us all.
Thank you for standing with me; I can’t tell you how grateful I am for your support.

Old Guard soldier Jamie Cryan declares victory for Stick Romano

According to a tweet by West New York Parking Director Jamie Cryan, Anthony “Stick” Romano is re-elected as Freeholder in the Democratic primary. The November election is viewed as anti-climatic to the primary tonight.

The Facebook page for Stick Romano is also declaring victory.  The VBMs look to be holding a major advantage and Hoboken voters appear to be in short supply today.

Romano’s statement on Facebook:

“This is not about my victory but our victory! This is not my town but our town! Thank you to all my supporters!” Read More...
