There’s been a lot of talk…

Maybe too much talk but let’s get some facts out there.  Here is the sign in question that created a firestorm of criticism all around back in October 2009.  During the fall mayoral campaign a triple Beth Mason sign was propped up against a lamp post outside of its Washington Street office.

The sign was very large and positioned to be visible along Washington Street.  But in order to do so it had to rest against the street light.

So was it a violation or not?  It caught MSV’s attention enough from across the street to go and capture this living monument of Hoboken’s Queen of triple transparency. Read More...

Hoboken stands alone in its quest for decency in elections

A tweet earlier from Councilman Ravi Bhalla laments the state of affairs in Hoboken with an election for BoE on Wednesday and the council races on May 10th noting:

MSV has not contacted Councilman Bhalla to learn the details but the first question is not what does the Councilman have to say in speaking to the matter of endemic corruption in local elections but where is the minimal inquiry from the local media?

Where is basic concern surrounding the 500 plus ballots for the BoE race most likely pegged to the efforts of local developer Frank Raia who is backing a slate of Carmelo Garcia, Frances Rhodes Kearns and Peter Biancamano?  Last year over 300 paper ballots emerged out of the 4th ward alone.  What does it take before there is a minimal level of scrutiny in this tsunami of evident fraud is even questioned? Jen Giattino responds to brazen daylight sign theft inside store

Jen for Hoboken City Council announces:

POLITICAL OPERATIVE STEALS 6th WARD COUNCIL CANDIDATE JEN GIATTINO SIGNS FROM SUPPORTERS
A local Hoboken 6th Ward store owner sent the Giattino campaign footage of political operative Matt Calicchio removing her campaign signs (video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mqmPuiaMxn0). The store owner forwarded a statement explaining, “a man walked into my store on April 19th and said he worked for Jen Giattino. He told me she knew there was a $100 fine for having her posters in a store’s window.” She continued, “[he] removed the signs and took them with him.” This is fishy because the Hoboken Zoning Office is the only department or entity that has jurisdiction over signs and signage. The office confirms that political material and campaign literature is exempt from signage restrictions and fully protected by the 1st Amendment, unless they are somehow creating a dangerous condition. However, political signs must be removed within a week of the conclusion of the election. Matt Calicchio is a foot soldier for the Beth Mason – Michael Russo faction of the City Council reelection, which includes Giattino’s opponent, Nino Giacchi. Just 5 months ago, Calicchio was named in sworn affidavits from 4th Ward residents that allege he offered them $40 to fill out a vote-by-mail ballot for Tim Occhipinti in the recent special election which shifted the majority in the City Council and resulted in Beth Mason becoming Council President, which was reported in Patch.com (http://hoboken.patch.com/articles/fourth-ward-campaign-heats-up) New Jersey politics are notoriously dirty, but Jen Giattino was looking forward to running a clean and fair campaign on the issues. “I cannot even begin to convey the level of disappointment I am feeling right now. We have run a clean, honest campaign about issues affecting the 6th Ward. The fact that Nino Giacchi has not publicly denounced the behavior of his operatives removing our campaign signs shows that even if he hasn’t directly contributed to the culture of political corruption in Hoboken, he is certainly enabling it to happen,” said Jen Giattino. MILE SQUARE VIEW EXCLUSIVE

You’ve seen the Mike Russo tapes… you’ve read the Peter Cammarano transcripts and now MSV has obtained incontrovertible video evidence of the latest Hoboken election skullduggery, a Mason-Occhipinti campaign worker stealing signs from inside a local business – in broad daylight.

The heist took place in the middle of the day employing a daring ruse where the political operative pretended to represent the 6th ward council candidate Jen Giattino’s campaign.  The suspect identified as Hoboken 4th ward resident Matt Calicchio entered Kayla’s Cleaner’s on 7th and Garden Street early last Tuesday afternoon just before 2:00 pm. Paper Ballot Tsunami strikes the BoE Election!

RED ALERT – VOTER FRAUD IN PROGRESS

If past is prologue, here’s a story you probably won’t read about in any “real” Hoboken news source until well after the election.  Indeed, should the past hold to form, you’ll only see a story long after the elections are counted and certified.

Rumblings about the rampant fraud in paper ballots noted extensively here last fall in the 4th ward special election have led to disturbing vote by mail totals on the upcoming BoE election this Wednesday as a new record of the questionable paper is hitting the County Board of Elections.

Last year well over 300 vote by mail ballots from the back of the fourth ward were counted in favor of one late breaking slate with perennial candidate Frank Raia, a local developer listed as its campaign treasurer.  This year’s tally heading to 600 citywide is a virtual tsunami!

The 2011 beneficiary of such questionable activity appears headed to another Frank Raia backed slate “the Whole Child,” consisting of the Hoboken Housing Executive Director Carmelo Garcia, BoE member Frances Rhodes-Kearns and Peter Biancamano.

Unlike last year’s statistical anomaly where 90% of all the vote by mail paper ballots came out of the 4th ward’s Housing Authority, it’s being supplemented with an effort into other staples of the old guard’s voting blocks.

Rami Pinchevsky – ‘corruption only ends when wheeling is stopped’

Rami for Council announces:

4th WARD COUNCIL CANDIDATE RAMI PINCHEVSKY ON ANTI-WHEELING FAILURE

Last night, Councilman Peter Cunningham reintroduced a campaign finance ordinance to the Hoboken City Council which would have ended the political practice of wheeling – laundering money to political candidates to circumvent donation limits.

The most recent example of wheeling in Hoboken was in the 2010 November special election for 4th Ward Councilman. In that election, current council president Beth Mason was able to legally give Tim Occhipinti over $13,000 or five times the legal limit for one individual. Her donations made up close to 20% of the total money spent in that election and secured victory for Occhipinti. On his first day as councilperson, Occhipinti set the wheels in motion for Beth Mason to become Council President. Read More...

Hospital authority announces $91.7 million transfer agreement

=&0=& =&1=& =&2=& HOBOKEN, NEW JERSEY – The Hoboken Municipal Hospital Authority today announced that it has voted to authorize the execution of an agreement to transfer ownership of Hoboken University Medical Center (HUMC) to HUMC Holdco LLC, an entity whose principals have common ownership with nearby Bayonne Medical Center. The total value of the transaction is approximately $91.7 million, and it ensures that HUMC will remain open as a full-service, acute-care, community hospital for at least seven years while retaining jobs in the City of Hoboken. Under the authorized agreement, HUMC Holdco will pay in cash the full outstanding balance of the $52 million bond obligation guaranteed by the City of Hoboken upon closing of the transaction. HUMC Holdco will also assume certain liabilities and has earmarked more than $20 million for investment in HUMC. The City of Hoboken will not receive any funds as part of the transaction. Following execution of an agreement, and before the transaction can be finalized, certain conditions must be satisfied that include a review by the New Jersey State Department of Health and Senior Services, through the Certificate of Need process, which includes a public hearing process. “One of my most important priorities when I took office was to ensure that our Hospital would remain a full service acute care facility and to relieve our City of the significant obligations associated with its $52 million bond guarantee,” said Mayor Dawn Zimmer. “This Agreement satisfies both of these important objectives and is a significant milestone for our City.” “This is a significant milestone,” said Toni Tomarazzo, Chairperson of the Hoboken Municipal Hospital Authority. “The comprehensive process to identify a potential buyer for the Hospital has been ongoing for almost a year. The Authority’s Request for Proposals (RFP) was issued in late July 2010 and set forth the Authority’s clear objectives: to maintain the facility as an acute-care hospital, to preserve the jobs, to continue the valuable working relationship with the medical staff of the Hospital, and to relieve the City of Hoboken of its bond guarantee obligations.” “The Authority has worked diligently since signing a Letter of Intent with the Purchaser in January 2011 to negotiate and finalize the terms of the Agreement,” added Tomarazzo. “There is still much work to be done before the transaction can be finalized, but we are optimistic that we will be able to proceed expeditiously toward a closing.” “The Hospital, like many stand-alone community-based medical facilities, faced a challenging fiscal position,” said Steven Rofsky, Chair of the Authority’s Finance Committee. “This Agreement will help our Hospital thrive while at the same time relieving our City of the risk associated with the $52 million bond guarantee.”    # # #
