Downtown First Ward candidate Mike DeFusco: ‘Ability to compromise with new energy will breach Hoboken’s political divide’

Mike Defusco

From the desk of first ward City Council candidate Michael DeFusco:

Friends and Neighbors, Election Day, Tuesday, November 3, is less than two weeks away. Over the past five years as a Commisioner on our City’s Zoning Board, I’ve fought to see our neighborhoods move forward while still maintaining Hoboken’s unique size and scale. I know that my experience, energy, and ability to compromise will breach Hoboken’s political divide. If elected, I will advocate for innovative land use around Hoboken Terminal, turning the empty and unsightly area into a small park — a place for recreation, outdoor cafés, and food kiosks. This will have the added advantage of helping the southeast in withstanding storm water damage in Hurricane Sandy-like events. While I strongly support the planned northwest and southwest resiliency parks, both of which were opposed by my opponent, we need more green spaces downtown.  Another important topic for our transit-centered community is the recent PATH service cuts. I want to again restate my extreme disappointment with these cuts. Like many of our neighbors, I take the train daily to NYC and the decrease in scheduled service not only lessens our quality of life, but seriously hurts downtown business.  Most people think that their vote doesn’t matter but in this election, your vote is critical so let your voice be heard. It’s time for new energy and new ideas to move Hoboken forward, so please mark Election Day, Tuesday, November 3! Your neighbor, Mike DeFusco

Councilwoman Jen Giattino: The vision for Hoboken parks

From the desk of Councilwoman Jen Giattino:

Dear Neighbor,
We all know how important Church Square Park is to our neighborhood.  That’s why I worked hard to secure new basketball courts and playground equipment, along with other improvements.

Opportunities for active recreation as well as places to enjoy open space are essential to our quality of life. Parks also serve as a defense against flooding.

That’s why, I will continue to:
  • Push for regular maintenance and improvements for all
    of our parks
  • Strongly support moving forward with a new 6 acre park
at the BASF site in Northwest Hoboken
  • Back the strategic use of park space as a bulwark against
flooding, including constructing water retention tanks in
our parks to limit stormwater damage
  • Support expanding active recreation opportunities for our
    children and families
Thanks for your support!
Please VOTE 1C on Tuesday, November 3rd,

Jen Giattino

Last call for alcohol

Horse notes from all over…

Hoboken is chalk full of fun today or is it Hobroken?

Some say it’s broken. Grafix Avenger says it’s all a mystery wrapped in less than transparent accountability even as it’s called “Citizens for Accountability.”

She asks who are these imaginary citizens accountable to? All these citizens and not a single name let alone a Hoboken resident listed on a board roster. It’s apparently an out of town “anonymous” operation. Signposts up ahead (and emerging links) point to well funded development group MSTA and the Liberty Board of Realtors. Read More...

Two weeks out and the election begins to turn ugly

Two weeks from Election Day with the all critical majority of the Hoboken City Council up for grabs and the mood is turning sour in the Darksider Old Guard camp.

Outside of former councilman Ruben Ramos who is comfortable with his base of support in the fourth ward, the other ward races show signs his fellow council running mates are highly agitated or worse. The Hudson Reporter, the pro Old Guard rag announced on behalf of the Darksiders confidence they are looking at a sweep but the obvious contradictions in the story say otherwise and point exceedingly to one sharp Italian resident running in the first ward: Michael DeFusco. His unstoppable energy in the race directly calling into question the “Council of No” votes by Terry Castellano as she seeks 25 years on the Hoboken legislative body has set the Russo Clan into full panic mode.

Some of the most ugly votes in question on the last possible bidder in the eleventh hour to save Hoboken University Medical Center, repave Washington Street and to approve a 9-11 Memorial are ones Castellano cast since 2011 when she was last reelected. Castellano’s excuses don’t add up on any and hatred in two words explains it: Mayor Zimmer. Read More...

Mayor Zimmer: Help with the big push for November 3rd’s big City Council elections

From the desk of Hoboken’s Dawn Zimmer:

Blog      Volunteer      Contribute
Dear Friend,

As you may know, Election Day is just over two weeks away.  At stake is the future of our City.  This election is critical to continue the tremendous progress we’ve made over the past several years.

I’m proud to report that the five candidates I’ve endorsed for the City Council have been working tirelessly to get the message out about the importance of getting out to vote on November 3.  But they can’t do it alone.  That’s why we need your help.  Do you have any time between now and November 3 to volunteer for Councilman Peter Cunningham, Councilwoman Jen Giattino, Mike DeFusco, Tiffanie Fisher or Dana Wefer?

We could use your help in talking to your neighbors, knocking on doors, or making phone calls to convince your neighbors and friends to come out and vote.  This election will be won or lost by how many people we can turn out to the polls, and any time you have between now and November 3 will significantly help increase our chances on Election Day.

When you have a moment, could you reach out to Christian Duffy, who is managing our field operations, at duffy.christian12@gmail.com or at 732-221-8532 to let him know any days you might have to volunteer? One of the candidates, Council President Bhalla or I will call to follow up on this e-mail.

Thanks in advance for any time you might be able to give for our candidates, I really appreciate it.

Sincerely,
Mayor Dawn Zimmer

Carmelo Garcia, the Ethic Cleanser in trouble again

=&0=&

Controversy and an ethical quagmire are never far it appears when Carmelo Garcia’s public “service” is involved.

In the latest story involving alleged misuse of public dollars and possible mail fraud, Grafix Avenger broke a story of a Garcia mailer apparently going out to a limited part of the 33rd Assembly district – the sixth ward.

Garcia is running for a Hoboken sixth ward City Council seat against Councilwoman Jen Giattino. A limited mailing to only sixth ward residents would demonstrate misuse of public monies and the office of Assembly. Read More...

Council President Ravi Bhalla updates park acquisition and election challenging

Council Pesident Ravi Bhalla announces:

There are a lot of exciting things happening in Hoboken this fall – here is a quick update!

Historic Progress of Park Acquisition
During a recent City Council meeting, we moved one major step toward acquiring a six-acre property for what will be the largest park in the City of Hoboken.  The plan calls for the construction of Hoboken’s largest park between 12th and 13th streets between Adams and Madison streets. The park will also serve as a flood mitigation tool, with an underground water detention system to store at least 1 million gallons of storm water runoff in one of our more flood prone areas.  The plan will also alleviate parking in Hoboken, with a new municipal parking garage planned for one of the plots of land to be acquired.  This innovative plan addresses open space, parking and flooding all at once.  It is rare opportunity to shape the long-term future of our city for generations to come.  I hope you will support this plan.

Construction of Hoboken’s long-awaited southwest park (located near Observer Highway and Harrison Street) is scheduled to begin this fall. More information can be found here.

I am also continuing my work as co-chair of the Hoboken Citizens Advisory Group, which will provide feedback regarding how the community would like to see a $230 million grant spent to develop a plan to combat flooding in Hoboken. To receive updates from the state regarding this project, sign up here. For more information about the project, click here.

Be a Challenger: It’s the best way to help us win on Election Day!

As you may know, Election Day is November 3rd, and fast approaching!  First and foremost, I am requesting your help to serve as a “Challenger” for our candidates at the polling locations on November 3rd.  Please email me at councilmanbhalla@gmail.com if you are willing to spend part or all of Election Day as a Challenger at a polling location.  This is a critical component of our Election Day efforts and a very, very important job, so I sincerely urge you to consider volunteering in this capacity.  Again, to find out more or to sign up, please contact me before Monday, October 19th.  Thank you!

In these local ward elections, representatives from each of your neighborhoods running for office to represent you. To see a map of the wards, click here.

I am proud to be supporting 1st Ward Candidate Michael DeFusco, 2nd Ward Candidate Tiffanie Fisher, 4th Ward Candidate Dana Wefer, 5th Ward Councilman Peter Cunningham, and 6th Ward Councilwoman Jennifer Giattino. I believe having these smart, dedicated residents as colleagues on the City Council will allow Hoboken to truly thrive and continue to improve.  Especially in an expected low turnout year, your vote is extremely important. I hope you’ll help elect representatives who can best help move Hoboken forward and continue the great progress we’ve seen in the past few years.

Please see my letter here, which was published in the Hoboken Reporter this past weekend.

Other updates…

As you probably noticed, many of our streets were re-paved in Hoboken throughout the last few months, and I was just as happy as you to see this completed. If you notice areas in need of repair, or see anything that needs to be done, please feel free to use our Hoboken311 website or app: http://www.hobokennj.org/311/.

I was also proud to be a part of the launch of Hudson Bike Share, Hoboken’s new bike share program, which is a new addition to the menu of transportation alternatives being provided by the City. For more information, click here.

As always, if you have any questions, concerns, or need assistance with anything, feel free to call me at (201) 647-6090 or email me at councilmanbhalla@gmail.com. You can also follow along with what I’m working on through Facebook, by liking my page here.
