Irene Sobolov wins the nod

In a long evening with interviews among six different candidates looking  to replace Phil Defalco as a trustee on the Hoboken Board of Education, Irene Sobolov earned the nod.

As reported minutes ago by Amy Sara Clark in Hoboken Now, Irene’s long 10 years of volunteerism played a large role in her earning the support for the role.   The vote in Irene’s favor was unanimous.  Trustee Maureen Sullivan in the first round gave the sole vote for another candidate, Scott Delea.

Talking Ed Note: MSV is very pleased to hear the news of Irene’s appointment. With ten years of participation in the school scene and children also attending, Irene has plenty of skin in the game.  In addition, she’s invited Da Horsey to events and we had an opportunity at her last invitation to wish her good luck.  We’ll take this opportunity to extend our congratulations and pass along the details of that invite:

The Cake Boss, Motorcycles and Social X-rays

The Cake Boss is making waves and Amy Sara Clark at Hoboken Now posted a piece about tonight’s upcoming episode.  What will people do to get on a popular reality TV show these days?  It’s all recounted in her interesting story.  Either get the DVR up or watch it live depending on if you will be at tonight’s big Board of Ed meeting tonight.

That promises to have a lot more drama.  Tonight it will probably be like a City Council meeting.

Coin Swindle – Das Autos

The Hudson Reporter posted a story referencing a report from the Ashbury Park Press on how cars were part of the million dollar coin swindle:

In pleading guilty to an accusation charging him with second-degree theft before Superior Court Judge Francis R. Hodgson, Brian A. Petaccio, 49, said he split more than half of what he took with an unnamed municipal official who directed him how much to set aside for their personal take.

The indictment alleges that unnamed official is Corea.

Petaccio’s principal’s business, authorities said, is the manufacture, sale and leasing of arcade games and coin-operated machines with a crane claw used to grab toys. In its investigation, the state found coins from Hoboken parking meters were being commingled with coins from arcade machines and [allegedly] dumped in a lump sum into a United Textile bank account.

The money, authorities said, was then [allegedly] used to pay for Petaccio’s personal expenses that included Porsche and Mercedes payments. Read More...

7-11 Opening Tomorrow

5th and Washington St.

Earlier today, the tell tale signs of an imminent opening told the story with a stack of magazines laying at the front door.  Later, we saw the lights on and went inside and asked if MSV could take some shots.  The manager present said he’s not the franchise owner but worked for the corporation.  He said if everything goes right, they’ll be open for business tomorrow.  We welcomed them to the neighborhood and wished them success.  And yes, as you can see below in the video, the slurpee machine is also up and ready to rock.  Lots of freshly made sandwiches and breakfast food, it should be a good location for folks looking to grab coffee or food on the run coming or going. What’s next on the culture of corruption hit list?

When you’ve been around the block a few times, your eyes are opened to the ways of the world and yet a small minority will stay true and steadfast in seeking the grail.  Our friend the Wile E. Coyote is certainly part of that select club in Hoboken that never wavered and never yielded to the culture of corruption.  Here’s a tribute video we’re posting, a salute to what has passed and what lies ahead.

As the state fiscal monitor, Judy Tripodi and her team are rounding out their mission to set the town’s finances on the path to competence and sanity, the Mayor’s office and City Council are now charged with taking the next steps in pushing the envelope.  In the now famous words of City Council President Peter Cunningham on the Parking Utility swindle, “For God’s sake, there’s money going out the back door.”  Now we can begin to plough ahead and execute on these matters uncovered in the million dollar coin swindle and beyond.  We know there’s more and we’re calling for  the most dreaded words in the English language to the old guard: Forensic Accounting.

Just do it.

Here’s a report some may have missed issued by the state detailing how New Jersey and its local municipalities dug the hole deeper.  Just in case you missed it:

Celebrating Frank Sinatra

City Clerk Jimmy Farina is running an operation out of City Hall one day each year.  It’s a little birthday party for Hoboken’s favorite son, Frank Sinatra.  Amy Sara Clark covered the event Friday for Hoboken Now.

Most people in Hoboken have a favorite Sinatra song or story and Da Horsey has one or two as well.  As a child, mom met Sinatra and he made a point of sending over an autographed picture.  Still have it to this day.
