Election fliers, but where’s the election?

An uptown colleague sent this flyer (pictured below) over early this morning.  He found it on his car.  Apparently, some people are really ginned up for the election.  What election?  MSV has not heard of any City Hall election either.  Is someone planning on resigning?  If so we didn’t get the news.

Hoboken had most of last year’s calendar crowded with elections and electioneering.  Perhaps someone has lost their calendar.  What year is it again? Read More...

After 36 years of BoE service, Jimmy Farina earns award

Interim superintendent Carter joined by Board President Rose Marie Markle in presenting Jimmy Farina an award for his 36 years of service on the Hoboken Board of Education.  Last night’s meeting was his final one as a BoE member. There was sincere enthusiasm in the applause and much reflection on his efforts.  As Jimmy himself said, longer than he thought going back to the days of President Richard Nixon.  He denied any role in Watergate to much laughter. BoE member Carrie Gilliard was also presented an award for her nine years and three terms of service.

Interim Superintendent contract renewed

This clip details the discussion of BoE members regarding interim superintendent Carter and the Business Administrator Bob Davis.  Their contracts were renewed in a 7-1 vote.  Some important points noted in this discussion concerning waste, streamlining of functions, elimination of positions and substantial savings to the BoE and Hoboken.  Both of these men have played critical roles in the day to day efforts to identify and fix a multitude of problems at the BoE.

Board member Maureen Sullivan was the dissenting vote against the contracts retaining the interim superintendent Carter and the BA Robert Davis. The discussion begins with some public comments before the Board members take up the matter.  Listen carefully to the superlatives mentioned in the work of both these men.  It’s hardly overstated. Horse Sense: Can you see the clouds through the trees?

With Hoboken resident Frank Raia opting to choose his commitment to the Hola Charter School and dropping out of the race, Patricia Waiters has joined with Kylie Colon and Ken “I’m independent” Howitt to form an X slate leading into tonight’s debate.  That is about as low key as any of the significant events leading into next week’s BoE election on April 20th.

A lot of heat has been generated leading into tonight’s debate.  The most recent hot winds were blowing around the high school’s theatre program and its artistic director who has been reclassified as a teacher.  The Real Results Maureen First slate circulated a flyer stating this was under threat by the current BoE.  No person or group is identified but we’re sure they are not referring to BoE member Maureen Sullivan.  Ironically, MSV heard when there was a vote on the theater program, Maureen Sullivan stood alone in voting against it.  We’d ask the question but no answers come from this particular elected official and so why bother to go through that all over again.  Among the town’s elected people, Maureen truly does stand alone: Maureen First and only. Hoboken Elks name Irene Sobolov Citizen of the Year

Friday night was a celebration of citizenship and community recognition for the Elks here in Hoboken.  Years of community service is highlighted with this year’s award going to Irene Sobolov.  To folks who know Irene, the award is hardly a surprise.  She has a low key tenacity to get things done and it’s nice to see it recognized.

“Considering the Elks Lodge and all their members contribute so much to the community, it was an honor to receive this award from them,” Irene stated.  Here are some family shots from Friday night.

A hearty congratulations to Irene for the much deserved recognition for her service to Hoboken.  Tonight folks can see her and her Kids First team at the BoE debate at Stevens.  They will be taking on the former slate of Frank Raia along with the Real Results slate.  The BoE election is April 20th.
