The Cake Boss “corner”

Office of the Mayor announces:

CITY TO DEDICATE CORNER OF WASHINGTON & NEWARK STREETS “CARLO’S BAKERY WAY

The corner of Washington and Newark streets is getting a little sweeter. Hoboken Mayor Dawn Zimmer said the City Council will vote tonight on designating the busy downtown street corner “Carlo’s Bakery Way” in honor of the 100th anniversary of Carlo’s City Hall Bake Shop, a local favorite made internationally famous by TLC’s hit reality show, “Cake Boss.”

“Carlo’s Bake Shop is a Hoboken institution which has both satisfied the sweet tooth of residents and visitors and served as a catalyst to bolster our community’s image and local economy,” said Mayor Zimmer. “It is only fitting that we dedicate the corner of Washington and Newark streets in their honor to mark Carlo’s 100th Read More...

Tim Occhipinti takes another shot for City Council seat

The Hudson Reporter states Tim Occhipinti will throw his hat in the ring for the 4th Ward seat currently held by Councilman Michael Lenz later this month.  Occhipinti has been a frequent attendee of City Council meeting over recent months, and is expected to make the formal announcement June 17th.  Attendance and speaking at City Council meetings is often an indicator of interest for potential candidates seeking elected office in Hoboken.

Tim Occhipinti (l) joins HHA commissioner Jake Stuiver and Public Safety Director Angel Alicia (r) to listen in at a City Council meeting earlier this year.

In addition to throwing his hat in the ring again for elected office in Hoboken, Tim Occhipinti established a website last year called Hoboken Volunteers, a gathering point where people can view and offer their time for a variety of local groups and organizations.  He previously ran for City Council last spring as an independent.

At the most recent City Council meeting, Occhipinti joined a parade of local residents complaining about the Municipal Garage being moved to the current Pino’s tow yard angrily concluding, “This is our home.”  No decision has been made on a location by the city which has reissued the RFP process for potential sites. Breaking: TransponderGate – Only 9 of 160 unapproved

=&0=& The internal review of the transponders saw a simple process of identifying legitimate use among the vast majority of the 160 devices initially turned off.  In an interview with Hoboken.patch.com Director of Transportation and Parking Ian Sacs stated there were only nine of the originally 160 not reactivated after the holders of those 151 units were able to show they were being used properly.   Although there were far less being used improperly than originally thought, the City’s press release didn’t provide that detail giving the public the impression of far more unapproved use. There is a question remaining on how many traceable units have been shut down after the internal audit was completed and reviewed.  Word is there are some unhappy city employees as a result. The figures on misuse are far lower and disappointing in the sense the public was given the wrong impression, but MSV is happy the transponder auditing was carried out.   Let’s see more of this in the future: a lot more.

MILE SQUARE VIEW EXCLUSIVE

The initial city press release about the 160 transponders being shut down after an internal audit by Director of Parking and Transportation Ian Sacs now shows a final count of those not accounted for doesn’t even remotely approach that figure. Based on information from the Mayor’s office, only nine of the 160 were not matched to legitimate official city vehicles.

The initial audit conducted by Director Sacs began in October.  The timeline of the audit is thought to have concluded early this year.  The reason for the initial press release referencing the 160 units used outside of the appropriate city controls now scaled back to a much more reasonable nine is not clear.  An update on this story will be forthcoming. 2nd Street revamped now two way street, new bike lane

City of Hoboken announces:

SECOND STREET SEGMENT CONVERTED TO 2-WAY, BIKE LANES ADDED

The last block of Second Street before the waterfront was converted recently from a one-way street to two-way operation to improve circulation and reduce unnecessary traffic on Sinatra Drive along the waterfront. The conversion, paid for entirely by an adjacent property owner, also accommodates loading and parking activities associated with the J.Wiley buildings.

As part of the project, Transportation and Parking Department Director Ian Sacs asked the property owner to upgrade pedestrian crossing signals at the River Street intersection to the newer count-down system in accordance with current standards and required bicycle lanes to be included in the new configuration. Remembering the Fallen

Today is Memorial Day, a day to reflect on those who have given their lives to create this unique Republic and those who have laid down their lives since. Looking backwards is incomplete. This nation is at war.

Recently, the United States noted the 1,000 mark of the fallen in Afghanistan. At the moment, the largest and most decisive force is being mobilized to take and hold southeastern Afghanistan. Yet, there are many others in harms way in Iraq and on the tense border of North and South Korea. Read More...

Con Man welcomed in Hoboken High

Hoboken is again in the local news and as you can probably guess, it’s not good news.  About a week or more back a con man calling himself Dr. Dexter managed to navigate his way into Hoboken High School and obtain administrative approval to “employ” kids to participate in his con game of selling folders to residents on the street.  He pocketed about $180 from the kids’ efforts before failing to show up on a Sunday at the local McDonalds. Parents hearing this information then contacted the police. Read More...

Temporary Municipal Garage under RFP resubmission process

Office of the mayor announces:

Update on the Location of the Municipal Garage from Mayor Zimmer

Based on community feedback, it is very clear that there’s a great deal of misunderstanding regarding the municipal garage issue. My Administration is working as hard as possible to develop every potential option for solving this problem. The following provides an overview of the situation, along with information about the process going forward.

Important update on the bid process
The bid responses for the two RFPs (Request for Proposals) issued two weeks ago were scheduled to be submitted no later than today, Friday, May 28th. Unfortunately, the integrity of the bidding process was compromised when the bidding list, which is confidential information prior to the bid opening, appeared on the Internet. Business Administrator Arch Liston has directed that the bidding process be rescinded and re-advertised. An internal investigation regarding the matter has been launched, and appropriate action will be taken against persons found to have been involved in any wrongdoing. Read More...

Summer weekend, America’s pastime, they’ll make great pets

Walking around Hoboken, it’s hardly unusual to see a Yankee or Mets hat or t-shirt but it’s also not unusual to run into Boston Red Sox or Philadelphia Phillies fans.  The Phillies were just in New York to play a three game set.  Since their appearance in the World Series last year and the Mets trials and tribulations of late, the expectations were for more local disappointment.

But that didn’t happen.  For the first time since 1969, the Mets shut out a foe for three straight games.  The Phillies, uh the Phlops were devastated even with holding first place. Read More...

Director Angel Alicia accused of “double dipping”

Director Angel Alicia is the subject of a complaint filed with the New Jersey Attorney General’s office for overlapping pension and pay – allegations made by an officer in the Hoboken Police Department.  The complaint stemming from a review earlier this year of the Hoboken Police Department audit, stated the role Mr. Alicia currently holds acting as Public Safety Director should be discontinued.

The complaint filed by Lt. Detective Mark Competello claims Director Alicia improperly assumed the position of Public Safety Director in Hoboken while still officially part of the Union City Police Department overlapping on both pay and pension while failing to meet a time requirement in between the two positions.  Lt. Detective Mark Competello insists the time requirement of six months being out of the Union City Police Department was not satisfied.  Director Alicia states in an interview with Hoboken.Patch.com he in fact met that requirement while taking terminal leave from Union City.
