Talking Ed Note: Education in the State of New Jersey is filled to the gills with two things: money and politics. Most recently, Hoboken’s Board of Education found itself in a catch-22 situation; its designated choice for the position as superintendent was not being given a thumbs up or down contract review from the County Superintendent’s office. Beth Mason’s 2010 politics of personal destruction: her year in review

Councilwoman Beth Mason heralds a banner year if your measure is taken by the number of personal attacks you make on people who get in the way of power and ambition as the measuring sticks for success.

Early this year Beth Mason launched attacks on Councilman Ravi Bhalla with ethics charges – the story “broke” on Hoboken411, called Mason411 by many, concerning him voting on a resolution to complete legal work for a case over years the council unanimously approved.  Her call for his resignation blew up when analysis of her campaign street money surfaced with numerous unresolved ELEC problems. Chris Christie scores victory with arbitration legislation

Gov. Chris Christie reached a milestone in state reform when state Democrat officials in the Assembly reached a compromise yesterday on a key part of his toolkit – arbitration.  A compromise for a new formula will limit the increases to 2% annually for police and fire contracts.

Mayor Dawn Zimmer an early advocate of the Governor’s reforms will see an impact locally when the legislation reaches Gov. Christie’s desk.  Final approval is expected by January.

Currently Hoboken’s police and fire unions have been in negotiations with the city, all four operating without a contract for several years now.  Many speculated the logjam would result in the entire matter going to arbitration. Read More...

Beth Mason’s wheeling pay to play practice under threat by new state bill

A bill introduced by a State Senator champion of pay-to-play legislation is working to undermine the games played with monies bypassing the intent of existing law.

The practice called wheeling occurs when donations to an organization or candidate are in turn sent directly to another – a customary but unacceptable inversing of the of pay-to-play laws says Sen. Loretta Weinberg (D-Teaneck).

Sen. Weinberg acting outside of party lines intends to pursue legislation that will stop the end run from the intent of her pay-to-play legislation when she was in the State Assembly.  The bill, should it become law would tighten the loophole where candidates feed monies through third parties and then have it deposited where they like. Sign of the Times: Weasel with an easel

There’s been some talk about the poster who coined the phrase weasel with an easel – MSV believes commenter Hobbes is the rightful heir to such a claim.

There’s delicious ironic dilemma for the NJDC and one of its board members highlighted on Grafix Avenger in a story about the innuendos enticing a certain type of hate speech over on Mason411.   It’s been said the NJDC is still linking to the hatchet job there but even more troubling is the link remains even with the nasty rantings exhibited there just yesterday.  MSV understands Larry Stempler was warned but became angry saying the NJDC linked to Hoboken Patch.  Sorry, not so Mr. Stempler. Grafix Avenger lays out all the gory details.  Congratulations to Beth Mason for showing us karma ain’t just a you know what; it also can strike quickly with extreme prejudice. http://grafixavenger.blogspot.com/2010/12/attention-njdc.html#comments
