Dear Friends and Neighbors,
It may be hard to believe, but there is another election right around the corner, on Tuesday, June 8th. The election is a primary election for U.S. House of Representatives, County Sheriff, and your local Democratic and Republican Committeepersons.
I am writing to urge you to vote for your local committee candidates listed in Column B of the ballot, as well as Congressman Albio Sires for Congress and Frank Schillari for Sheriff.
What does a committeeperson do? I have been asked this question often. A committeeperson is your local neighborhood representative. There are two committeepersons in your district. They ideally should identify matters of concern to your local neighborhood and work with your ward councilperson to address these issues. Additionally, committeepersons are voting members of the Hoboken Democratic Party and the Hudson County Democratic Committee. In this regard, they have the ability to influence party leadership and the priorities of the local party.
Mayor Dawn Zimmer and many others have worked hard to assemble a slate of candidates for Democratic Committee listed in Column B of your ballot. Over the last year we have made significant progress in advancing much needed reforms in Hoboken. This election is an important part of that effort. We want to bring good and well intentioned citizens to elective office and provide them a chance to serve at the local level, and make a difference in their communuties.
Please help us achieve this goal. Remember to vote Column B on Tuesday, June 8th. Polls are open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.

MSV received this tasty morsel regarding Sunday’s Secret Garden Tour:
Ahoy! Victoria MacKenzie-Childs wrote the Da Horsey to promote the Polka Dot Garden as a stop on the Secret Garden’s tour, which takes place this Sunday.
Yankee Ferry & The Polka Dot Garden are newly added to the tour, by popular demand ! Isn’t that swell? There’s something about The Polka Dot Garden that has bonded and brought out the most childlike spirit. When Richard and I disembark to come on land, almost every time we are greeted and told how they read about it!
The Polka Dot Garden is the giggle, on the Garden Tour. I am making Polka Dot pies to further enhance the festivities and fuel the fun for celebrating a most revolutionary urban farm . . . right here in Hoboken, The Polka Dot Garden! There’ll be a host of pies, from the little Polka Dot Apple Pies, (already people are ordering more!) to Venison/Ginger (upstate bow caught) with yams, beets and mushrooms, to boot. There will also be Fish Polka Dot Pies with lobster, mussels, and rod fished perch with potatoes, caramelized onions, and sweet peppers. And, then, of course apropos to the theme of the day . . . the best Vegetable Polka Dot Pie ever . . . I think. A vegetable variety with caramelized vegetables, which were grown in our up-state farm garden, then boat baked. So, stop by for pie, eh?
We will focus on the garden, of course . . . telling people how we made it. But we can offer tours again, for a $10 contribution to Yankee’s renovation if people would like to visit, as well as keeping the shop of our works in place for Sunday (people are stopping us and asking if they can come over to complete what they are collecting, so it is perfect timing to have one more go at the shop. Oh, and we are offering a few really reduced prices on things we have only one or twos of, or on things that we are ready to move into new renditions. So, it’s a Sail / Sale!
We will offer Polka Dot PatronShips, which are growing! It is so exciting for everyone. Everyone is looking forward to supporting the idea, joining in the Polka Dot Party at harvest time, and taking advantage of an hour a week holiday on Yankee to read or sit and soak up the sea air. Those who know about the opportunity for PatronShips, come to us and ask, “How can I become a Polka Dot Patron. I want to support this! ” So many are saying this to us. So come take a look, but don’t blink, or you’ll miss the next inch of growth.

Thursday afternoon was a summer like day maybe a tad on the warm muggy side. Entering into City Hall mid-afternoon, the temperature felt hotter. The day after the raucous City Council meeting from the night prior showed the heat had not dissipated but risen right into the mayor’s office.
In a comprehensive interview Thursday with MSV, the mayor addressed numerous issues of the day: the Municipal Garage a centerpiece among them.
Regarding many third ward residents concerns and the recent circus like atmosphere at the City Council on repeated rumors the municipal garage would move to 6th and Jackson Street the mayor said she had watched the entire proceedings that ended near 1:30 am. “I am listening very carefully to the community. I am talking to them directly, responding to them. I hear their comments and am not going to push something that has strong concerns.” The mayor also suggested a community meeting was probably in the works. Read More...

STATEMENT FROM MAYOR ZIMMER REGARDING DEVELOPER’S PROPOSAL FOR MUNICIPAL GARAGE
At yesterday’s City Council meeting, SHG Hoboken Urban Renewal Associates LLC (“Hekemian”), the redeveloper for the site of the existing Municipal Garage, asked that the existing contract be restructured for the sole purpose of restoring Hekemian’s profits given the decline in the real estate market. One of the changes proposed was a $1 million reduction in the agreed upon annual PILOT obligation until “market conditions improved.” Under these terms, we would be giving Hekemian a $1 million tax break every year until the market “comes back,” which could be quite some time.
The proposal also included the elimination of the obligation to provide 24 units of affordable housing. Instead of a community benefit worth, by Hekemian’s own calculation, $1.8 million – $4.8 million, Hekemian is proposing a single $1 million payment. Read More...

HOBOKEN TO SAVE $146,000/YEAR FROM MUNICIPAL COURT APPOINTMENTS
As a result of a series of appointments made by Mayor Dawn Zimmer and approved by the City Council to the Municipal Court system, the City of Hoboken will realize significant yearly cost savings.
“My first concern is always to find the most highly qualified candidates for any job opening,” said Mayor Dawn Zimmer. “Without losing any services, our City and taxpayers will save more than $146,000 per year from these appointments.” Read More...
Our colleagues at the Hoboken Journal and Hoboken.Patch.com will have all the details on last night’s proceedings to watch, read and review the series of events in a very long evening that went to about 1:30 in the early morning hours, but here’s an open thread for those who wish to express their feelings about the proceedings.
Considering there’s no election in sight, the grandstanding and politics tossed in with little respect for other City Council members not to mention the public was in plain view. Craven political ambitions, obstruction for its own sake and hatred for the emerging voting coalition has taken our visible government to some less than respectable places. Frankly it’s a shame but that very self-examination is sorely lacking. Read More...
Lots of blowback from unusual places and sources. Can the city possibly undo the deal former mayor Roberts made on the Hoboken Municipal Garage? If true, there’s real hope the city may be in fact stringing together a way to undo years of damage of his administration by possibly buying back the garage with the existing buyer stepping aside.
Timothy J Carroll broke the story at the Hudson Reporter earlier and MSV has an inkling of horse sense this in fact may be possible.
Here’s why: Read More...
Tonight’s City Council meeting has a full plate and the Hoboken Journal is back once again with all the bells and whistles to make it as painless as possible.
Tune in at 7:00 this evening for a full dish of the Jolly Green Giant. He promises to serve up some tasty treats.
