City details cleanup efforts after Irene

City of Hoboken announces:

INFORMATION ON CLEANUP EFFORTS

The City of Hoboken is focusing on cleaning up after the recent storm. Environmental Services crews are collecting the largest pieces of debris and trash while the Fire Department is hosing down sludge. The Parks division is cleaning parks and working to clear fallen trees. Street cleaning is taking place where it is needed most. While residents are asked to respect street cleaning rules so that cleaning can take place, enforcement of those rules will not occur on Monday since residents who may have evacuated are not able to move their vehicles. Where in the ‘Boken is Tim Occhipinti?

After the flooding, Tim Occhipinti is missing and Grafix Avenger has put out an all points bulletin, taking it upon herself to get the word out.  Some little kid is going to have to make way for Timmy.

Apparently Agent Avenger is on the case and the Feds will be undoubtedly grateful for her efforts.  (Think of all the tax dollars saved if they can find Tim and all his political friends in one place.)  In the meantime, MSV can only offer conjecture on where Timmy is but a reader noted he may be busy in a cram course like for SAT preparation but his class is called “How Beth taught me to love power and hate the First Amendment.” Beware when the serpent speaks about your freedoms.  It could be yours he’s after next.
Tim Occhipinti got the hang of the Old Guard doublespeak and now he’s after your freedoms.  Beware the serpent who speaks with forked tongue.
=&0=&=&1=& Tim Occhipinti spoke at the last City Council meeting defining your rights to speech but he took a FBI satirical series and called it “a credible threat” with the mention of shooting off a door knob when the Feds come to make arrests. What do you think he’s really afraid of? Okay, let’s help Agent Grafix Avenger find Tim: =&2=&

Councilman Peter Cunningham expresses thanks

From the desk of Councilman Peter Cunningham:

Friends, family and neighbors,

Wow, what a couple of days!  This is a quick note to thank the Administration and Mayor Zimmer’s team, C.E.R.T, OEM and City employees for doing such a great job!  We were out front and center setting the precedence for hurricane preparations in the New York City area.  I utilized key contacts throughout the 5th ward to spread the word and to help look out for our fellow neighbors; and we thank you all as well for all your support and hard work.  Residents were as well amazing with their preparations.  I don’t want to say that we challenged mother nature, but we were certainly prepared for the worst.

It all worked according to plan, and thank goodness mother nature recognized our efforts.  As I have said, the City’s preparation is like having an umbrella in anticipation of a rainy day.  You hopefully don’t have to use it, but you’re glad you have it.  One other friend referred to our preparation as an insurance policy.  And he’s right. It was a job well done.  We must also remember that when another storm approaches, we just might have to do this all over again, and I am confident that we will.

Aside from the pure public safety concerns of Hoboken storms, and the need to be prepared, flooding is a major problem that can be solved. Our use of the Emnet technology (under ground sewer system analysis) is producing very important data that along with “high speed” pumps, and proper flood mitigating development will solve our flooding problems – finally.  I am proud to be at the forefront of these important solutions, and to serve the people of the 5th Ward and the City of Hoboken.  Thanks all…see you in the neighborhood and be
safe.

Peter

MSV Exclusive: Bricks tumble at 6th and Jefferson

Just minutes earlier a cascade of bricks came tumbling off the facing of an elevated window at 6th and Jefferson.  No one was hurt but the 25 foot crash drew a crowd and it’s a indication that all is not back to normal.

Be careful out there.  A number of streets are closed due to flooding and some people are walking through them even though fallen power lines have not been secured.

A man observes the pile of debris that fell off the side of the building.
The bricks fell from the right side of the window frame.

City of Hoboken announces:

City of Hoboken

Advisory: RESIDENTS MAY RETURN TO HOBOKEN; SUGGESTED WAITING UNTIL AT LEAST SUNDAY EVENING

Hi Horsey,

Residents may return to Hoboken, however, thousands of homes are still without power and flooding is widespread, so it is suggested that they wait until at least 6pm on Sunday. Due to flooding, a very large number of streets are inaccessible and barricaded. Flood waters may not recede for many hours. It is unknown when power will be restored.

“It’s business as usual in at least half of Hoboken,” said Mayor Dawn Zimmer. “I thank all the residents who heeded the call to evacuate and ask that they strongly consider waiting before returning to flooded areas.”

Residents may drive only through areas that are not flooded or barricaded. Bars without flooding may reopen. As a reminder, it is dangerous to walk through water in flooded areas, which consists of rain water and sewage.

Non-emergency calls should be directed to 201-239-6643/6644. The Fire Department cannot respond to false alarms in flooded areas until the water recedes. For full details, view this message on the web.

Shoprite area completely flooded, Southwest hammered

It could have been worse but it’s more than several feet deep.
The Southwest a notoriously bad for flooding has taken a bad hit. City officials believe the entry from the south will be blocked due to the heavy water for some hours yet.

Emergency officials report more than half a dozen power lines are down along with trees. They are attending to it and evaluating across the city.

A solitary man stands at the edge of the water’s abyss at Shoprite.
