Mayor: Re: Timing of Saturday Bar Openings

In an update to our earlier story on Hoboken bars opening at 9:00, MSV sought clarification on the process.  The mayor’s office submitted her statement for the record:

It is the law according to municipal code that taverns may open as early as 6 a.m. on every day of the week except Sunday. The City has no power to force them to open any time later.  At this time, we can only ask them to voluntarily open later as a courtesy to the community. Last year, many volunteered to open at 11 a.m., however, according to Police Chief Falco this proved to be counter-productive.
He determined getting the bars to voluntarily open at 9 a.m. this year will act as a better deterrent by helping to  keep individuals off the streets, prevent long disruptive lines from forming in front different establishments and act as a disincentive for individuals holding house parties, which are the largest concern for public safety on that day. Bars and restaurants have actually been managed well during St. Patrick’s Day celebrations in Hoboken. They have extra security and are able to monitor their customers, which helps prevent them from causing any potential problems.
In addition, our hospitality community is also working to enforce rules and regulations at their establishments by educating their customers about violations to municipal ordinances and we have done the same through numerous local and social media outlets.
