BREAKING: Mayor Zimmer vetoes elimination of $25 user fee

Hoboken Mayor Dawn Zimmer applies her first veto from roman brice on Vimeo.

Mayor Dawn Zimmer today issued her first veto in a press conference at the Multi-Center earlier this afternoon. The veto reinstates the existing $25 usage fee for children’s activities run by the City of Hoboken. Wednesday night the City Council voted 5-3 to eliminate the fee it had supported unanimously 8-0 earlier this year.

Talking Ed Note: Anyone who had doubts about the seriousness of Mayor Zimmer’s true fiscal responsibility need not look any further. She’s defined what it means to be a budget hawk. Others who apply the label to themselves with no supporting evidence are mere pretenders. Read More...

Finale on responsibility on behalf of the taxpayer

Last night Hoboken got a glimpse on what is to come with the new ‘majority,’ – the five members who have assumed control with the installation of Tim Occhipinti on the City Council.

Fiscal responsibility was the first victim on the paltry recreation fee.  The public was told by the Council of No Four (Russo, Mason, Castellano, Occhipinti) plus Nino Giacchi there is really no need for a $25 fee for recreation, they said the taxpayers should pick up the whole tab.

Not so when it comes to State of NJ law re: parking ordinance for the Corner Cars program

Families who can’t afford the $25 usage fee for each activity are covered by the existing policy of the Zimmer Administration ensuring that children’s parents who truly can’t afford it are able to have their kids participate. Read More...

Gloomy skies, cold winds and a black cloud over the City Council

As the end of the year looms with most Hookenites having their minds elsewhere, the finale rings in on the City Council’s last meeting for 2010, the honorable City Council President Carol Marsh presiding.

After the controversial November 4th special election, the post election Council meeting was a twilight zone like affair.  Cool demeanors in the front of the room lacking invective, and anything but festive considering the installation of Tim Occhipinti into the council seat and his first meeting on the dais.  Something was brewing and they knew it.  Sure enough a two fer by week’s end: criminal referrals from a Board of Elections to the County prosecutor, then another push up the hill to the NJ Attorney General’s office. Hertz speaks to its Hoboken Corner Cars customers

White Connect By Hertz

A number of readers have noted this communication from Hertz on the Hoboken Corner Cars program:

Dear Corner Cars Member,

You may have heard about the recent deliberations at the Hoboken City Council meeting on the status of the Corner Cars program provided by Connect by Hertz.  We want to reassure you that the Corner Cars program is alive and well and there has been no impact to Connect’s service.  Connect is working with the Department of Transportation to educate Council members on the program’s benefits and we are urging council members to support an ordinance establishing designated Corner Cars locations throughout the City.
Hoboken‘s Corner Cars program has been a success, with approximately 1,000 members after only 6 months.Corner Cars is taking cars off Hoboken’s streets with its “Surrender Your Permit” program which provides a package of incentives, valued at more than $500, to residents who give up their parking permit. To date, more than 45 residents have given up their parking permit and are living a “car-free” lifestyle!
If you’re interested in learning more, or to voice your opinion, we suggest you write your Council person (http://www.hobokennj.org/council/).As always, we welcome your feedback, questions, and comments; please feel free to contact the Connect by Hertz Member Care Center at 877-654-4400, the City Department of Parking and Transportation at 201-653-1919, or your local Connect representative, Michael Reid at 203-738-9540.

NJ Transit takes Hoboken, part deux

Tonight the short noticed meeting right on the back of the holiday season sees the next stage of the NJ Transit vs. Hoboken saga with a meeting tonight in the Hoboken Terminal’s waiting room.

17 or 26 stories, what’s the difference?  NJ Transit doesn’t say what’s next, not yet.  Does this building look like a centerpiece or a subsidiary to more and larger towers?

The last meeting produced a big community turnout and a singular voice of concern from the community.  NJ Transit officials made a game show of it waiting until  the end before revealing the prize: a building in the twenty plus story range with little detail or how it fits into their plan for development in the larger area of its transit yard. Drive to work every day? City offers reduced “Monthly Limited” rates

City of Hoboken announces:

=&0=&=&1=& Residents Who Commute by Car Can Save 30%

For residents who commute every day by car and are looking for a little reprieve from garage parking fees, the City of Hoboken is now offering a new garage parking option called “Monthly Limited.”  This option offers a reduced rate of $140/month for garage parking in city Garages “D” and “Midtown,” and $180 in city Garage “B.”  This represents approximately 30% off the standard monthly rate; however, the reduced rate comes with a requirement that owners must remove their cars from the garage weekdays between the hours of 10:00 am and 4:00 pm. For residents who commute daily by car, this requirement is relatively easy to meet. Nonetheless, each month, residents who park with the “Monthly Limited” option are granted two days in which they can be in the garage during the 10:00 am to 4:00 pm period. If these are not used during month, they can “roll over” and be collected throughout the year for various purposes, such as leaving the car in the garage while on a vacation. Read More...

Four retired police are back on “the job”

Some recent retirements with the Hoboken Police Department means the end of a career with the organization but it doesn’t mean they won’t be seen on ‘the job’ again.

Four retired officers now have found greener pastures in retirement – as civilian workers at reduced pay – compensation that won’t be adding to their pensions.

Robert Castellano – back on the job.  What is this?
Pictured at a September City Council meeting, Mr. Castellano is back
working at the HPD as a civilian since his November retirement.

The four recent retirees: John Castellano, husband of Councilwoman Terry Castellano, Bernard Della Fave, Jose Rivera and Emil Donfrio previously all earned more than $90,000 a year. Read More...
