Councilman Mike DeFusco weighs in on the 2019 budget

Official release:

Statement from Councilman Mike DeFusco on 2019 Budget Adoption Councilman Mike DeFusco is releasing the following statement in response to comments made by Mayor Ravi Bhalla concerning last night’s 2019 budget adoption:

“Mayor Bhalla’s distorted view of reality when it comes to the municipal budget is almost as troubling as his continual misuse of taxpayer resources for his own petty politics. The DCA absolutely did not reject the city budget as the Mayor said in his political attack delivered on a city platform, and the only potential job cuts in this budget will come from a bloated Mayor’s office that has increased its spending by 40% over the prior administration and engaged in highly questionable political hit jobs. It’s unfortunate Mayor Bhalla feels the need to keep personally attacking two dedicated community leaders who have done so much for our city in Councilwomen Giattino and Fisher, and I hope that all residents can see through his bizarre rhetoric and understand that the City Council is doing its job to protect taxpayers while the Mayor only cares about political attacks.” Read More...

City Council closed session on the Monarch Project as litigation reaches the NJ Supreme Court

The City of Hoboken received a lifeline with the Monarch Project as the uptown towers proposed by Ironstate Development is headed to the New Jersey Supreme Court.

The announcement the court will review the case comes amid expectations of a negotiated settlement where the two 11-story towers in the northeast corner of town would potentially see a solution elsewhere.

A rendition of the Monarch Towers as proposed by Ironstate Development, re: the Barry brothers in northeast Hoboken.
The years-long litigation will be decided in the NJ Supreme Court unless a settlement comes first.

Residents in the third and fourth ward have been hostile at the notion of denser development in their neighborhoods.

The New Jersey Supreme Court granted a petition by the City to review the litigation where Hoboken saw Appellate Court rejections surrounding a controversial Planning Board decision not to hold a vote on the matter during the Zimmer Administration. Read More...

OLG hangs in for the OG’s Pupie

If you think Frank “Pupie” Raia is being given the cold shoulder across Hoboken, take a look at this reader-submitted photo on Sunday.

Apparently, Our Lady of Grace Church didn’t get the memo that the walls are crashing in on Pupie.

The church is led by controversial OG (Old Guard) reliable Father Santora who is known for his anti-Zimmer crusades over the years and his chronic itch to let the local hospital be sunk under her mayoralty. In other words, he’s a polar opposite to the priest played by Karl Malden in the Hoboken classic 1954 movie “On the Waterfront.” Read More...

Sign of the Times: Pupie Power pales under Feds pincer pressure

=&0=&
In 2013, the “One Hoboken” slate with council candidate Frank “Pupie” Raia and his fellow
slate underwriter Beth Mason were all smiles. Several guilty pleas of co-conspirators
allegedly directed by Raia according to the Feds may leave his fate twisting in the wind.

The tide is turning in Hoboken on its alleged tradition of buying votes. The first of several dominoes to drop came last fall when Liz “Church Lady” Camis accepted responsibility for her role in what the Feds called a voter bribery scheme.

The next domino tumbled earlier this month when long-time thug Matt Calicchio, a years-long worker most of this decade for former Councilwoman Beth Mason followed suit.

Then yesterday, Raia sidekick Dio Braxton pled to his role in the alleged bribery scheme and flipped. He’s pointing a ready finger in the direction of Frank “Pupie” Raia. Read More...

Hoboken needs a bigger public safety push on e-Scooters

Director Ryan Sharpe riding an e-Scooter and not protecting the noggin.
It’s an opportunity missed for public education, an uphill battle
in the new world of e-Scooter transportation. Oh yeah, bad form
all around.

Ending week one of the Hoboken e-Scooter pilot allows a chance for evaluation and necessary self-criticism.

The Hoboken pilot didn’t kick off too well. Any educational efforts leading into the launch were inadequate with the public response strong in favor and in opposition. All agree continuous education is necessary.

Talking over the weekend to a man and woman traveling on the upper Washington St. sidewalk; it was clear they didn’t have any idea they were doing anything wrong. They admitted they hadn’t read much other than to get the e-Scooters rolling. Read More...
