Hoboken Rotary Raises Almost $25,000 to Help Hoboken Charter School Rebuild After Fire

The Hoboken Rotary announces:

Tuesday night the Hoboken Rotary hosted a benefit party with over 500 guests and raised almost $25,000 for the Hoboken Charter School. The school will use the money for repairs after a recent fire damaged its building and displaced over 190 students. Rotarian and local clothing store owner Rory Chadwick led the Rotary’s effort to organize the party, including securing a venue, gathering raffle and auction prizes, inviting guests and other arrangements. Previously Chadwick organized benefit parties after separate fires displaced the residents of 87 Jackson Street and 300 Washington Street. The school at 713 Washington Street is across from Chadwick’s store. “I looked out my window and saw the school on fire, and it looked bad,” Chadwick said. “When I found out the inside was ruined I called my fellow Rotarians and got to work. It’s not easy to do this in such a short amount of time but when Rotary members work as a team we can do anything.” Chadwick contacted Cory Checket, owner of the Turtle Club restaurant and bar at 936 Park Avenue, about hosting the benefit. “When the Hoboken Rotary approached us to host the fundraiser we didn’t hesitate,” Checket said. “It is truly remarkable how well Hoboken can come together to rally around a neighbor or institution in need.” The Turtle Club gave a free drink to all guests who donated a suggested $10 at the door. After hundreds of guests responded to the benefit’s Facebook page, neighboring restaurant 10th & Willow also opened to accommodate the overflow. Dozens of local businesses donated raffle and auction prizes, and posted collection jars at their respective locations. Chadwick was able to obtain several big-ticket prizes, including signed sports memorabilia from football stars Eli Manning, Ray Rice and Troy Polamalu, game tickets, artwork, theater tickets, music memorabilia and a Hudson River cruise. Several Hoboken Rotarians contributed to the benefit, either by donating prizes or by providing support, including bar owner Joe Branco, financial planner Christopher Mackin, magazine publisher Joe Mindak, realtor Ron Zimmerman and attorneys Lisa Russo and Marie Stinson. Hoboken Charter’s Executive Director and K-8 principal Deirdra Grode said she hopes her students can learn from seeing the community come together to help. “I hope that our students see that it is possible to overcome adversity with hard work, commitment and team work,” Grode said. The Hoboken Rotary has a standing fund to collect donations for this and other emergencies. It will continue to collect donations for the school in the coming days. “It is great to see the community come together in helping each other,” said current Hoboken Rotary president Ryan Mitchell. “This has been and will continue to be our mission, as our motto is service above self.” To donate to the Hoboken Rotary’s fund for the Hoboken Charter School, and to learn more about the Hoboken Rotary, visit its website, friend its Facebook

City Council @ 7:00 – Cafe ordinances duel, Russo’s Solomon Dwek problem

Live streaming by Ustream

It’s showtime tonight for the dueling sidewalk cafe ordinances.  Why it’s been pushed off a number of times is beyond us here.  From the beginning it was clear one had done a lot of homework and worked out reasonable changes based on the last time the ordinance had been updated and the other looked like a sixth grader pretending to do an ordinance.

It’s Jen Giattino vs. Tim Occhipinti for the 12th and last round.  Go ahead and decide who is who. Read More...

NJ Transit’s plan at terminal, City Council on tap

There’s meeting upon meeting with NJ Transit presenting their latest incarnation of a revitalized Hoboken in the terminal itself.  It’s actually a two-fer, one presentation is in the morning at 8:00 and another at 6:30 this evening.

The City Council also has a full agenda on tap for tonight with double digits in ordinances meaning the move of public portion to the beginning of the meeting right after will seem not so early.  The idea is taking hold quite well and a broader slice of the public is already taking advantage. Is Michael Russo a FBI Snitch or just misunderstood?

Yesterday’s story created quite a stir generating dozens of comments with the surprising revelation of the incomplete information on the Russo for Hoboken campaign.  The evidence of that information came to light after correspondence between Mayor Zimmer and the Old Guard City Council found its way over weeks into the Hudson Reporter letter section.

The correspondence initially shared privately escalated when MORTe (beth Mason, tim Occhipinti, michael Russo and TErry castellano) opted to use the letter as a political tool attacking the mayor.  They sent the letter to the Hudson Reporter and Hoboken411, both reliable pro-Old Guard outlets. “Russo for Hoboken” missing bank data reopens question if Michael Russo took bribe from FBI informant Solomon Dwek

=&4=&=&5=&

Questions surrounding what’s transpired in Councilman Michael Russo’s election account “Russo for Hoboken” since 2008 have been raised in a letter by Mayor Zimmer and is the subject of a page one story in the weekend paper.

The Hudson Reporter however missed the most important question.  Did Councilman Mike Russo deposit a $5,000 bribe from FBI informant Solomon Dwek into his Russo for Hoboken account?

The transactions, specifically deposits into the Russo for Hoboken bank account could reveal bonafide evidence of such a bribe Michael Russo has denied took place when he agreed to accept $5,000 from FBI informant Solomon Dwek in 2009 on FBI surveillance video. Read More...

Mayor Zimmer reply to minority council letter reopens 2009 FBI sting to Michael Russo’s missing campaign transactions

The following letter from Mayor Dawn Zimmer appeared in the weekend paper in reply to questions from an earlier letter sent by council members Beth Mason, Tim Occhipinti, Michael Russo and Terry Castellano.

Their letter appeared two weeks ago in the Hudson Reporter and was simultaneously planted on Hoboken411 where Beth Mason runs her political operations and censorship prevails.

The Hudson Reporter notes the mayor’s response saw “modifications” before its publishing two weeks later. Read More...
