4th ward special election – further investigation is proper step
The following is a letter submitted by Stan Grossbard who attended yesterday’s investigation meeting at the Hudson County Board of Elections.
Yesterday, the Hudson County Board of Elections referred all of the evidence
of fraud provided to it by the Mike Lenz for Council campaign, together with
additional evidence developed through the independent investigation of the
Hudson County Superintendent of Elections, to the Hudson County Prosecutor.
The Hudson County Prosecutor will be responsible to review the evidence,
conduct any further investigations they deem needed and determine whether
criminal prosecutions are appropriate. The Board of Elections advised that
all Vote by Mail ballots have been impounded pending a determination by the
Prosecutor as to whether they are needed as evidence.
As one of the Vote by Mail challengers for the Lenz for Council campaign, I
am gratified that this matter is being handled with the seriousness that it
deserves. This is not political. The race is over, and Tim Occhipinti is
our 4th ward City Councilman. As a 4th Ward resident it is my sincere hope
that he will represent my neighborhood well. But the decision of the Board
of Elections to take the highly unprecedented step of making this broad
criminal referral makes clear that there is real evidence that fraud may
have occurred. The integrity of our democratic system requires that these
matters be seriously addressed regardless of whether they effected the
outcome of the election, and I am gratified that the proper steps have so
far been taken.
