Nothing earth shattering tonight. The ordinance for Pier A repair is back and maybe it will move forward. There’s a changed contract amount for the Hoboken Municipal Prosecutor and it’s substantially lower than when Mayor Zimmer took office and also lower than the predecessor last year Tracy Zur.  You may have seen her name come up in connection to Beth Mason.

Beth Mason gave her money at lets’ say an interesting time while Zur was the Hoboken Municipal prosecutor.  Grafix Avenger has done some outstanding work connecting the dots. (Let’s add that Judge Mongiello by all accounts has been outstanding and MSV has seen it both professionally and personally.)  No such pronouncements can be offered about the former municipal prosecutor here. Monarch battle, legal dust up carve out lines between Mayor Zimmer and Ruben Ramos

A battle is emerging between mayoral candidate rivals in Hoboken with Assemblyman Ruben Ramos exchanging fire in his criticism of Mayor Dawn Zimmer surrounding the City’s legal strategy and bills.

Assemblyman Ramos issued a press release covered by the Hudson Reporter and signed by his council slate charging over seven figures spent in legal fees in 2012.  The article references Ramos’ comments:

Ramos focused his criticism specifically on lawsuits which have not ended in Zimmer’s favor, including Friday’s decision and a ruling last month regarding the uptown Monarch development. The developers originally promised to build tennis courts for the city but later reneged on the offer and proposed building two luxury condominiums. A judge ruled that the city’s suit to force them to stick to their original plan.

HHA’s Stuiver: ‘Carmelo Garcia ignored my calls for a public process on Vision 20/20 last February’

Dear Horsey: I wish to set the record straight on the lack of transparency regarding the “Vision 20/20” redevelopment/expansion of the Hoboken Housing Authority. Despite HHA Executive Director Carmelo Garcia’s belated and wholly unspecific overture to have a public forum on the controversial project, the reality is that when I was board Chairman, I repeatedly urged Mr. Garcia to organize multiple forums involving all community stakeholders to fully inform the public about the plans and solicit feedback and ideas. As recently as Feb. 18, I e-mailed Mr. Garcia the following: “Director, Let’s plan on scheduling a public-input forum of all community stakeholders, map out the feasibility of the municipal permitting process and gauge feedback and approval prospects from the city levels before committing to any next steps. We don’t want to put the cart before the horse. In light of recent miscommunication resulting in the need for retroactive permits, it is incumbent upon us to be thorough and meticulous and professionalize our interface with the city and greater community.

Any public statements to the contrary would be presumptuous and premature. Please feel free to contact me if anyone has any questions or concerns.”

Not only did Mr. Garcia defy my instruction, he thoroughly ignored it and plowed ahead with his own gameplan, never responding to me in any way.
While such insubordination was quite typical throughout my chairmanship, the fact that now, after receiving blowback from the City of Hoboken and many city residents, Mr. Garcia is spewing vagaries about public meetings and releasing partial data about the plan, is really rather laughable. It seems our Executive Director really does take the Hoboken citizenry for fools, trying to sell people on the same platitudes and double-talk he used to try to ram this through the board. As I have said from the very beginning, a project of this magnitude cannot be initiated in a vacuum – it has an impact on the entire Hoboken community and should be handled accordingly.
Amid Mr. Garcia’s desperate flailing to get the stakeholder buy-in he failed to seek when it might have made a difference, I think it is important that we take stock of the people who have been most vocal in their advocacy for his fast-track approach. The loudest, most recurring champions of building first and answering questions later include:  Perry Belfiore, Michael and Michele Russo, Timothy Occhipinti, Theresa Castellano, Beth Mason, Ruben Ramos and Eduardo Gonzalez. By my count, these have been the most public faces of advancing this plan as quickly, and with as little information, as possible, through their statements at City Council meetings, HHA meetings, letters to the press, and other forums. This cast of characters is, in my opinion, a rogues gallery of people we can always count on to aggressively push whatever is against the public interest, instead serving private, special interests. The presence of this group on the front lines of any massive disbursement of public funds is, in my opinion, reason alone for people to be wary and demand more information before allowing anything to move forward.

Welcome back to the Boys of Summer from the FBI

It was an odd day as Da Horsey decided not to put up a story about helicopters since everyone else is infatuated with those critters flying around our skies like so many mosquitoes.  Buzz, buzz, buzz.

Then Da Horsey got buzzed right here by our friends from the Boys of Summer.  Did you know the summer classic will be at Citi Field this year?  It will be quite the event for Major League Baseball and make many in the area nostalgic for boys of summer past. Here in Hoboken of course the Hoboken Sopranos and Old Guard play different kinds of games.  Grifting games, legal games, Vision 20/20 construction ripoff games, gamesmanship of every variety just not the bats and balls kind. Of course Hoboken may be the nation’s all time leader in governmental electronic data hijacking.  Who came up with the idea to install that archive file in the mayor’s office anyway?  Da Horsey promises we won’t tell anyone until the indictment. Did you know that just yesterday Horsey gave directions from the PATH to people from LA looking to visit the Cake Boss?  Hoboken is becoming quite famous.  Imagine if visitors all across the nation would visit the famous bakery and then go across the street to see the exhibit on the biggest local government hijacking of data in the whole country?  The mayor would probably dedicate it to the FBI Cyber Division – as well she should! Well no one may have told you but Horsey did a little story on some of your colleagues working on the Hoboken case.  You’re probably really busy running down terrorists and Chinese hackers looking to pick up some patents while trolling on the internets but Da Horsey is really happy you stopped by, even if the visit is nothing more than a bot sent out on a stroll.  Hi Bot!  We’re sure it’s all just a big coincidence. Hey, do you know how Horsey can get an autographed picture of Ralph Marra?  He is a true Italian American Hoboken hero.  His father came to Hoboken from Italy in 1930. We love and miss him. Both Ralph Marra and Chris Christie shared a special love for Hoboken and Hudson County. Have you heard Hoboken really wants to feel the love again?  We even have a Facebook page, “We Love the FBI in Hoboken” with over 100 of your biggest fans. =&1=&: MSV would like to thank all the tireless protectors of the Republic especially the Boys of Summer who sacrifice so much individually along with their families to protect us from enemies =&2=& Hope things sort out with the ‘suits’ down the hall.

Grist for the Mill Bombshell: Patrick Riciciardi – ‘My deal gets me off, no prison time’

Patrick Ricciardi the former City Hall IT Manager who confessed last March to ransacking the electronic communications in the mayor’s office is bragging a deal’s been cut with the US Attorney’s Office – and he’s saying it means he won’t go to prison for his crimes.

Multiple independent sources have told MSV Ricciardi is gleefully passing along word of his “deal” where he faces sentencing June 29th of up to five years in federal prison.

In March, the Jersey Journal reported Ricciardi faced up to five years based on sentencing guidelines and cooperation with federal investigators. Read More...

NJ Appellate Court reverses Jim Doyle appointment

=&0=& =&1=& =&2=& In a stunning reversal of the Hudson County Superior Court decision appointing Jim Doyle to the City Council, the NJ Appellate Court has reversed the decision handing a victory to the Old Guard Council members and the Beth Mason family which staged and underwrote the legal wrangle going back  to last October. (The appeal/stay to the NJ Appellate Court had prevented Jim Doyle’s participation since early this year.) The decision concluded the City Council vote failed to meet a mandatory 30 day deadline (even in the face of Superstorm Sandy) and abstention votes were sufficient to prevent a tie and vote by the mayor. The Old Guard council members had formulated a dual strategy to prevent Mayor Dawn Zimmer from casting a fifth deciding vote as she had done back in 2009 when her fourth ward seat became open due to her election to mayor.  (At that time, Beth Mason abstained and her vote was counted as a “no” vote leading to the mayor’s deciding vote.)

The NJ Appellate Court ruled the Superior Court was erroneous in the interpretation of abstaining as a “no” vote in the City Council and that the council members who were absent previously for the vote: Beth Mason and Michael Russo could not be compelled to show up and vote along with their allies under the council vacancy law as ordered by Hudson County Superior Court Judge Peter Bariso.

The ruling stated the open seat vacated by the resignation of former Councilwoman Carol Marsh who departed due to tragic family circumstances, did not require a vote as the council vacancy seat law only says the council “may” fill the seat within 30 days. Read More...

Talking Ed Note: What happened to the signers of the Declaration of Independence?  While some may dispute details on a few to a degree, there’s no disputing that many lost everything for affixing their names publicly resisting the British crown.

Hoboken July 4th information

Community: 4th of July Information for Hoboken Residents & Visitors

The City of Hoboken is expecting to host tens of thousands of guests to view the Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks which will take place over the Hudson River this year.

Traffic delays & mass transit
Based on prior years, residents and visitors who drive are advised to expect four hours or more of traffic and delays exiting Hoboken after the fireworks and at least two hour delays to exit municipal parking garages. In addition to delays, the gridlock can create a situation where public safety vehicles cannot effectively respond to emergencies, so the City strongly urges visitors to take mass transit. Options include the PATH, Hudson-Bergen Light Rail, NY Waterway ferries, or NJ Transit commuter rail or bus. For additional travel information, visit: www.hobokennj.org/visit/how-to-get-here. Visitors looking for parking will be directed to municipal garages B (28 2nd St) and D (215 Hudson St).

Heightened security
There will be heightened security, with numerous checkpoints staffed by law enforcement personnel along the entire waterfront area. Checkpoint entrances will be located at: 1st St & Sinatra Dr, 2nd St & Sinatra Dr, 3rd St & Sinatra Dr, 4th St & River St, 11th St & Sinatra Dr, 12th St & Shipyard Ln, 14th St and Shipyard Ln. The stairway from the Babbio Center to the waterfront will be closed. Any person entering these designated checkpoints will be prohibited from entering with the following items: backpacks, fireworks, coolers, glass bottles, cans, grills & barbeque materials, propane tanks, weapons, tents, alcohol, and other items not in the interest of public safety. Only factory sealed beverages will be permitted, excluding alcohol. All items are subject to inspection prior to entry into the checkpoint areas.

Vendors
Only Hoboken-licensed vendors will be permitted beyond checkpoints. The vendor entrance is at 4th St. and River St. and vendors are subject to screening.

Street closures
The following streets will be closed to all traffic except emergency vehicles between 8 am and midnight on July 4th:
• Sinatra Dr. from 15th St. to 1st St. (Sinatra Dr. from 4th St. to 11th St. will close on July 3, 8:00pm)
• River St. from Hudson Place (PATH) to 4th St., (limited access to residents and parking patrons only)
• 5th St. & Castle Point Terrace
• Hudson Place

Due to the closure of Hudson Place, the west side of Hudson Street from Hudson Place to Observer Highway will be the designated taxi area.

Parking restrictions
No parking will be permitted on the following streets between 8am and midnight on July 4th in order to provide safe access for emergency response vehicles:

• Sinatra Dr. from 1st St. to 15th St.
• 4th St. from River St. to Clinton St. (on the south side of the street)
• Willow Ave. from 11th St. to 4th St. (on the west side of the street)
• Hudson Place (by the PATH)
• Newark Street from Hudson St. to Sinatra Dr.
• Clinton St. from 7th St. to 8th St.
• Hudson St. from 14th St. to Observer Hwy. (on the west side of the street)

Disabled guests
The fishing pier located at approximately 9th St. and Sinatra Dr. will be open for disabled guests. Each may be accompanied by two additional guests. Pier C will be closed.

First aid stations
The Hoboken Volunteer Ambulance Corps will have first aid stations at Pier A Park, Sinatra Park, 8th St. and Sinatra Dr., 12th St. and Sinatra Dr., and 14th St. and Sinatra Dr.

The contractor is currently working
on site restoration as well as the
evaluation of the site electrical
repairs and landscaping replacements.
The initial sod installed is damaged
the contractor will re-sod with no
additional costs.  Graffiti removal
and the decking rehabilitation began
on July 1 and will be  followed by
landscaping restoration.  

Steven’s Park
Batting Cages – Bid Documents will

be advertised the week of July 8th,
with an anticipated award at the
August 7th regular meeting.

Walkway concrete work started
on 6/28/2013.

Dog Run is currently in design phase.


Church Square Park 
Bathroom is in the demolition phase which will be followed by the fit out work including electrical, plumbing and building trades.

Church Square Park Concert Series – every Wed on June, July and August from 7 to 9:30pm.

Update for Parks 

1600 Park
Soft soil conditions were found at

1600 Park. This caused a revision of
the design to strengthen the
foundation for the field lighting.
The lights are critical in accom-
modating the high demand for
field use by all ages in the community.
Completion to is expected for Sept.1

Sinatra Park 
Pile driving is complete and sheet
piles have been installed to hold
back the soil. Construction began
for the new pre-cast concrete pier structure which is the foundation
upon which the new soccer field
and walkway will be built.
Completion is expected for Sept.1
Elysian Park 
Bids will be received on
7/17/13 with award expected to
be made at the 8/7 Regular
meeting.  Construction will commence immediately   after
award notification.

Summer Pool Info
The Hoboken High School pool will  be open to all residents from July 8 to August 21, Monday through Thursday from 11am to 5pm.
“Mommy and Me” sessions will take place from 3pm to 5pm.
