DAS BOOT: Ravi Bhalla boots Cheryl Fallick and Mike Lenz from Rent Leveling Board

In a letter issued yesterday to the City Clerk’s Office, new mayor Ravi Bhalla offered a full list of seven candidates to fill the totality of expired positions on the Hoboken Rent Leveling Board.

Notably eliminated from the board are two well known Hoboken government officials: Cheryl Fallick and former councilman Michael Lenz who served as the board’s chair.

The two board members given the boot share one facet in common: both publicly backed Councilwoman Jen Giattino for mayor in last year’s mayoral race. Read More...

HOBOKEN POLICE DEPARTMENT INVESTIGATES SECURITY BREACH IN CITY HALL

Office of the mayor announces:

The Hoboken Police Department is investigating an incident that occurred at the Mayor’s Office on Thursday night.

A male individual entered City Hall through the Newark Street entrance just before 8:00pm on Thursday, February 15th, 2018. The person went through metal detectors and told security officers that he was going to use the restroom.

At the time, the only person in the Mayor’s Office was Deputy Chief of Staff Jason Freeman. Mayor Bhalla was on his way to the office following a community meeting. From his office, Mr. Freeman observed that a bag with an object had been thrown in the direction of the administrative assistant’s desk and made eye contact with the individual. The individual then ran out of the Mayor’s Office. Mr. Freeman called the police, which are currently investigating the incident. Read More...

Grist for the Mill: Ravi loves everywhere but Hoboken

Not a month in office and the declaration of war against most of the City Council by the new mayor comes with some extraordinary ventures outside the Mile Square City.

Mayor Ravi Bhalla is the man about town, scratch that, man about country. He’s managed to fit in not one but two major trips with a month in office and the question is being raised, does he intend to stiff Hoboken taxpayers with those bills?

The first trip was to Washington D.C. Did Mayor Bhalla appear before an important urban congressional committee on transportation or flooding to urge support for initiatives on behalf of Hoboken. Nope. It was a Democratic House “retreat,” re: pure unadulterated politics. He did however note in one tweet he is “sharing knowledge of Hoboken election lesson to help Dems win the midterms.” Outlaw “sanctuary/welcoming” cities being all the rage these days. How much lawbreaking will be helpful in November? Latest polling shows the trend for illegality coupled with massive illegal domestic spying for election purposes and higher taxes is not enhancing any resumes with American voters. Read More...

Mayor Bhalla raises specter of Hoboken voter fraud in bizarre attack on City Council

=&0=& =&1=& =&2=&
Mayor Ravi Bhalla

Hoboken’s new mayor launched a wild attack last week on most of the City Council alleging support for voter fraud but pointedly neglected to criticize the only council member who claimed Hoboken voter fraud non-existent.

After Councilman Mike DeFusco read into the record Wednesday night a text published exclusively on MSV where the mayor’s brother Amar Bhalla encouraged a behind the scenes-like “grind them into powder” exhortation, many council members responded with in-depth almost universal condemnation of voter fraud activities in Hoboken. Mayor Bhalla on veto referendum weaponization, ‘I’m running this show now’

=&0=&

Last night’s easy override of Mayor Bhalla’s veto by the Hoboken City Council offered little drama as for the third time a 7-2 vote hands Hoboken voters the decision on whether to bring back runoff elections in November.

Yesterday’s late news exclusive led to a vigorous discussion when the resolution on runoffs came up for a vote. Councilman Mike DeFusco read the entire text into the record pointing to the politicization of the issue with Mayor Bhalla’s veto.

Councilman Jim Doyle, who ran on the at-large council slate on the Bhalla campaign was stunned by the reference unaware whether it was a text or email. The discussion would lead to more than 30 minutes of discussion prior to the vote, mostly on the issue of voter fraud in Hoboken. Read More...

Bhalla Bros: “We know an override will happen” but let’s get political!

=&0=& Bhalla Bros view:  “Opportunity to box in our opponents” even with veto’s expected defeat

In a MSV exclusive, a text message between Mayor Ravi Bhalla, his brother and others obtained in a leak discusses tonight’s vote on the veto by the new mayor to politicize an expected override on a proposed referendum to allow Hoboken voters to consider runoff elections this November.

The January 31st text originating from the mayor’s brother, Amar Bhalla admits that winning with a veto is a lost cause writing, “We know an override will happen.”

The third City Council action on the runoff referendum is expected to pass again easily by resolution tonight. Read More...

Councilman Peter Cunningham: Hoboken Runoff Election Referendum

Official release:

Dear Neighbors and Friends, Much has been discussed over the last two months concerning whether or not we should put a referendum on the ballot for the voters to decide on reinstating runoff elections in Hoboken.  To be clear, the council is not voting to reinstate the runoff.  It would be decided by a vote of the people.  Unfortunately, those who do not support runoffs are perpetuating the notion that runoffs encourage “voter fraud.”  Data shows that this is simply not accurate as all elections are subject to this problem. Fraud is committed whether the vote is on the first ballot or the runoff ballot. We do need to focus our efforts on “voter fraud”, and I hope that it will be high priority of Mayor Bhalla particularly given his strong relationship with Governor Murphy and the newly-appointed New Jersey Attorney General.   The campaign rhetoric from the last mayoral campaign was particularly divisive and was not representative of how our city has progressed.  The amount of negative campaign literature hitting our mail boxes diminished the importance of the many local issues that should have been at the center of our debate.  In the end, the issues were not fully discussed, and Hoboken elected a mayor with less than 33% of the vote. Five years ago, we moved our elections to November and eliminated the runoff.  The Council is now faced with a new reality, and our responsibility is to carefully consider how to respond.  To that end, the Council will vote to ask Hoboken citizens to decide, and a referendum will offer you that opportunity. Thank you for your comments for and against the referendum, and please pass this along to your neighbors and friends.  I am always happy to hear from you. Thanks!!
