Councilman Ravi Bhalla on fundraiser tonight, Washington St. redesign and more

From the desk of Councilman Ravi Bhalla:

Dear Friends and Neighbors – I am writing to provide a brief update on some happenings in Hoboken and let you know about a few great community events. Community Fundraiser for Mayor Zimmer on Wednesday I am proud to be a host for a community fundraiser tomorrow, Wednesday, June 8 for Mayor Dawn Zimmer. Please bring your neighbors and friends and join us at the Pilsener Haus & Biergarten from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The cost is only $25 and tickets are available hereSmoother Ride on Washington Street Ahead I’m very happy to inform you that Washington Street will be re-surfaced this fall, and the work will be completed by the summer of 2017. In addition to a smoother ride for drivers, the street will be safer for pedestrians and cyclists. The re-design will include new street lighting, synchronized traffic signals, pedestrian countdown timers at crosswalks, and bike lanes. The City Council unanimously voted last week to approve a $12 million bond for the repairs. Safer waterfront walkway also coming I was fortunate to have led the effort to create a safe walkway for pedestrians and bikers along the city’s waterfront on Sinatra Drive near the Union Dry Dock property. The City has installed a temporary eight-foot wide walkway with cones and barricades, and after positive reviews, a permanent multi-use path will be installed this summer. I was very happy to hear feedback from residents who are already enjoying this added amenity and look forward to seeing the final product of this benefit for Hoboken. Hoboken Arts and Music Festival The Hoboken Arts and Music Festival, which was postponed earlier this year, will be held this Sunday, June 12from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. The 22nd Annual Festival takes place on Washington Street between Observer Highway and 7th Street, and admission is free. Over 300 artists, crafters, photographers, sculptors, food vendors, and more will be on hand. I will once again be sponsoring a table at the Festival to answer any questions and register voters in time for the extremely important fall Presidential and local School Board of Education elections. I’ll post the location of my table on my Facebook page on Sunday morning. Movies Under the Stars begins this week If you’re looking for something to do after Mayor Zimmer’s fundraiser, the popular Movies Under the Stars program begins this Wednesday, June 8 with a showing of “Creed” at Pier A Park at 9 p.m. Join your neighbors and feel free to bring a blanket or a low-back chair. This year’s showings include some blockbuster hits, including Joy, Star Wars, The Big Short, The Martian, Brooklyn, Jurassic World, and much more. Click here to view the lineup. Thank you again to the City of Hoboken, Projected Images of Hudson County, The Hudson County Division of Cultural & Heritage Affairs, and Apple Montessori Schools for sponsoring the program. As always, if I can ever be of any assistance, feel free to e-mail me at councilmanbhalla@gmail.com Sincerely, Ravinder S. Bhalla Councilman-at-Large

Someone is in the spotlight for an investigative story questioning when it’s appropriate for a  self-declared charitable organization to host a Super PAC fundraiser for an upcoming gubenatorial candidate.

That same exclusive report featured on Grafix Avenger received accolades and a hat tip from the Political Insider, Augie Torres at the Jersey Journal  who wrote last month:

— There are times those wild Hoboken bloggers can come up with some interesting stuff. The latest is on the Gravix Avenger site with the headline “NJ Senator Weinberg, Mason host Sweeney in Fulop’s backyard.”€  Read More...

Beth Mason trial against MSV set to conclude next week in Jersey City

In another legal saga approaching two years this September, criminal charges by Beth Mason against this MSV editor are set to conclude at trial next Thursday.

The trial completion set for June 9th in Jersey City Municipal Court stem from subpoena service in the notorious SLAPP-suit Bajardi v Pincus.

As in that widely reported First Amendment case, MSV in the end became a front and center issue. Although this website had never seen a single allegation of any kind in that civil case, articles here have been added into the criminal case. Read More...

Washington St. reconstruction funding on tap

Tomorrow the Hoboken City Council will convene with one big ticket item on the agenda. Washington St.’s reconstruction is up for a final funding vote.

Expect to see a unanimous agreement approving but more importantly, it’s the expected completion date for next fall of most interest. People simply can’t wait to see this project begun and completed.

Washington St.’s renewal is in effect the cornerstone of Hoboken’s infrastructure issues. The administration states the less than sexy infrastructure issue is a top focus and for many if not most of the Mile Square public the sporadic but frequent pipe bursts through the winter season is a constant reminder how porous the infrastructure is.
