| Community: Construction Update on 1600 Park, Pier C & Multi-Service Center During construction of 1600 Park, the contractor encountered unexpected debris, organics, and softer than expected soil conditions based on previous analysis and testing. This has the potential to impact the long-term settlement of the soil and the foundations used on structures and lights at the site. To ensure the appropriate foundations are used, a more detailed and deeper geotechnical investigation is needed. Borings will be drilled to approximately 75 feet and testing will be conducted on soils. The City Council will be asked to approve the additional testing at the Council meeting on Wednesday, April 17. While the field portion of the park was originally scheduled to open by the end of April, this additional testing is necessary to ensure the long-term safety and integrity of the park, and is expected to delay completion of construction of the field by approximately one month. “This testing is being done out of an abundance of caution so we can understand any potential long-term impacts on the park due to settlement of the soil,” said Mayor Dawn Zimmer. “Even short delays are disappointing, but I would rather get this park done right than to have to make expensive repairs in a few years. Very soon, our community will have a great new park with a multi-use field, rest rooms, dog run, and slide hill.” The bid specifications to repair Pier C are being finalized, and a bid will be issued within a few days. A bid to conduct repairs on the Multi-Service Center will also be issued shortly. Repair work on the Multi-Service Center will be phased so that the senior center can re-open first. |
