Beth Mason refuses comment: on her own platform!

Politics makes for strange bedfellows especially in Hoboken, but even for this town with its passion for hyperbole and drama, there’s always a surprise lying around the corner.

At Councilwoman Beth Mason’s lunchtime presser the other day, an apparent PR event with some off message Q&A time went tilt.  Usually, an event is staged with a message for the public a candidate wishes to get out.  At the same time, the media plays a role in doing more than merely taking pictures and retelling the story if there is an opportunity for questions. (Okay, stop laughing.  Your weekend assignment: define media.)

Now when the Councilwoman asked if there were any questions, there were none.  Except from a talking horse who after an awkward silence among the muckrackingless press corp, asked the following off the cuff: Read More...

Hoboken NJ Transit Skyscrapper – Halted

Posting a press release is usually not our bag baby, but in this case we are making an exception, because it’s that big:

MAYOR DAWN ZIMMER WINS HALT TO STATE LEGISLATION WHICH WOULD HAVE GIVEN NJ TRANSIT AUTONOMY OVER HOBOKEN TERMINAL  DEVELOPMENT PLANS City of Hoboken October 1, 2009 – Hoboken Mayor Dawn Zimmer announced today that she has won an agreement to halt state legislation that would have allowed NJ Transit to go forward with their plan to build skyscrapers over the rail yards in South Hoboken over any objections raised by the City and its residents.  Senator Paul Sarlo (D-36), the sponsor of this legislation, S-2972 has agreed that the bill will not go forward unless and until Hoboken is satisfied with its content.  This agreement was reached at a recent meeting between Senator Sarlo and Mayor Zimmer. Governor Jon Corzine arranged the meeting at Mayor Zimmer’s request. NJ Transit’s proposed $1 billion Hoboken and Terminal Yard Redevelopment Plan includes residential buildings as high as 45- stories and a 70-story commercial tower. It envisions 3,200 new condo units. It is a proposal that would drastically change the character of Hoboken. “I thank Governor Corzine and Senator Sarlo for recognizing that Hoboken residents must have a say in decisions that will have a profound impact on the shape of our City’s future,” Mayor Zimmer said. Zimmer went on to say, “I believe in a different approach to development-one that begins with what the community wants. Our over-emphasis on adding new condos has given us more flooding, more taxes and a costly stepped-up demand for city services. We must make sure that the NJ Transit project is at the appropriate scale for Hoboken.” “I believe it is important that the concerns of Hoboken be addressed,” Senator Sarlo said. “I pledge to consult with Mayor Zimmer and ensure that she is satisfied before proceeding with legislation in this area.” The state legislation in its current form would have given NJ Transit nearly unfettered authority to redevelop any property they own throughout New Jersey adjacent to bus stations, rail stations or rail yards in any way they see fit without regard to local zoning requirements or the wishes of host communities.=&2=&  Although the City Council had voted in unison to voice its concern over any plans the State had to push forward NJ Transit’s large development plan, there had been no commitment from the backers of the legislation in Trenton to respond in kind.=&3=&

“Why I’m voting for Dawn” – Jake Stuvier

In a bombshell letter yet to be printed in the Hudson Reporter, Jake Stuvier, former campaign manager for Councilwoman Beth Mason’s spring mayoral bid discusses his reasons for endorsing Dawn Zimmer in the November 3rd election.

(Jake pictured with Beth in closer times.)

The letter is just now available in the Hudson Reporter’s online edition.  In it, Jake recounts his change from being a campaign manager in a losing effort to becoming active in Dawn Zimmer’s campaign.  He continues to call Beth Mason a friend who he holds in high esteem but outlines the reasons he will be voting for Dawn in the November 3rd special election.  The zoning board’s nomination powers being returned to the City Council are among them, but Jake added Dawn’s integrity and willingness to listen to opposing views also impressed him. Nathan Brinkman braves the rain

After the rains blew through Sunday, we took a trot out to catch some of the town’s traditional fall festival.  We were surprised when we came across Nathan Brinkman, the new candidate in the mayor’s race working the crowd for votes.  Accompanied by Sean Connelly, the former Jersey City counsel and advisor to the successful former Mayor Brett Schundler, we asked for a picture and the pair obliged.

We spoke briefly with Nathan, on behalf of Mile Square View and discovered he is a regular reader when he enthusiastically asked if he was in fact speaking to SmartyJones.  Didn’t hold the gentlemen up as they seemed intent on speaking to real humans who vote in elections.  Looking forward to hearing more from Nathan and seeing what he brings to the table and the debate in this shortened election cycle.  There was also a sign at the Chris Christie stand.  As highlighted previously, Nathan’s spokesman is Bill Pascoe, the campaign manager for Doug Forrester who ran for one of the two New Jersey Senate seats in Washington in 2002 against Frank Lautenberg.

Today Nathan Brinkman also received the endorsement of the New Jersey Conservative Party as reported in Hoboken Now.  Nathan lives on Grand Street in the Fifth Ward and is a co-founder of the Hoboken Republican Club. Read More...

Sign of the Times: Art reflects Life

Yesterday’s soggy day brought some relief in the afternoon long enough for people to enjoy the Hoboken Fall Arts & Music Festival, at least until after it ended when a down pour broke out again.  This picture captures it well: art imitating life or is it the reverse. More pictures after the jump:

Campaign mud or illumination?

There’s a wave of Councilwoman Beth Mason’s campaign literature arriving in people’s homes this week.  There’s been some discussion on whether this actually helps voters understand the issues facing Hoboken or if they are solely negative.  We’ve heard some opinions on the matter and we’ll be revisiting it later.  Here’s two, one recent and one from earlier this year.  How similar or dissimilar are they?

What’s interesting about these flyers is each set look as if they came right out of the same print shop.  Notice the lettering and the color red and how similar they are almost right down to the type size.  The ones pictured on top are the new ones from Beth Mason’s campaign and the lower ones were the smear flyers from the spring. At that time, Cammarano’s staff denied they were responsible for the flyers and claimed they originated from the Beth Mason campaign.  Several weeks back we reported on the Hoboken Now story where the respective Political Actions Committees had confessed they were working on behalf of Cammarano for Mayor.  And who was the spokesman for that campaign?  Why the same person who is now the spokesman for Beth Mason’s campaign: Paul Swibinski.  Perhaps Richard Mason, listed as Treasurer for the campaign will comment since he’s not buried up to his eyeballs in the print shop. So the question now is, will Paul Swibinski be launching a denial on being the orchestrator for the last round of these flyers in the spring or will he also deny being responsible for these flyers sent out by Beth Mason’s campaign now? Some people displeased by the postal assault have suggested mailing the flyers to Beth Mason’s home to show their displeasure.  We however differ and suggest they be sent to the Beth Mason campaign headquarters c/o Paul Swibinski.

Ricky’s the popular costume store chain with locations in Manhattan just opened a store in Hoboken last Thursday.  Located at 222 Washington Street, the place is huge and has everything from masks to full ensembles.  No doubt it’s going to be a hit the next month and the folks inside said they may in fact stick around.

More photos after the jump:

You can go as a family member of Peter Camma-Rat0 The front of the store features the ever popular hippies, well the girls anyway.

A woman would need to sport a real sense of humor for this his and hers setup.

They have tons more.  The place is huge with everything for kids and those who are just keeping the kid in them for another year.
