21 BOE Superintendent Candidates Identified

More than a dozen and a half parents, educators, local officials and citizens gathered at the Wallace School last night to offer their views into a structured process to identify a new school superintendent in Hoboken.  Susan McCusker, the search consultant led the discussion covering in-depth questions and collecting feedback on immediate and longterm issues, important changes, leadership style, and bottom line questions a new nominee will face in the role.

A search campaign generated 32 inquiries with 21 completed applications. The feedback collected from last night will be added to the internal educators’ for weighing and consideration to a structured interview process.  All 21 candidates will remain confidential throughout the process. The timing for an offer is targeted for February 2010 with a start date by July 1st.

The 90 minute meeting was free wheeling and went off topic at one point with a brief appearance by Freeholder Anthony “Sticks” Romano and Hoboken resident Donna Antonucci debating the performance of NJ schools.  Susan McCusker brought back the discussion to the agenda of collecting the feedback. The parents offered many insights into the necessity of the superintendent to bring a “thick skin” along with strong “people skills” to take on the many challenges of the local schools.  At large Councilman David Mello, also a teacher, offered additional background on aiding the parents’ concerns in the search process.  The Councilman remained after the meeting and spoke with several residents on a variety of educational issues and concerns.
