Councilman Peter Cunningham on Mayor Ravi Bhalla expanding developer-union deal

Official release:

Dear neighbors and friends,  By now I’m sure many of you have heard about the deal the Mayor struck with KMS, developers of the Post Office Hotel Project, to provide a cash contribution to two non-profits in Hoboken – the Public School Foundation and Hoboken Community Center (formerly the YMCA).   I have issued the following joint statement with my council colleagues that calls this unilateral and autocratic action too narrowly focused.  There is no collaborative process.  We have many worthy non-profits as well as affordable housing and infrastructure needs.   Happy to gather your feedback.  And please forward on as I am sure many have no idea what’s happening.  Thanks, Peter =&0=& =&1=&

The Hoboken City Council subcommittee, tasked with evaluating the proposed Hilton Hotel project, was briefed for the first time recently with the revised plans for the hotel that have tentatively been agreed by Mayor Bhalla and KMS, the developer.  The modifications include changing the overall architectural feel of the project by adding three more stories to the plan that the mayor announced in April and 20% more bulk and square footage than what was previously approved in 2017 by the City Council which the mayor (then councilman) opposed.  In exchange for this increase, KMS will provide $3 million in cash to Hoboken for community benefits which currently have been earmarked by the mayor to two, private non-profits.  The mayor is expected to ask the City Council to approve these changes at the October 17th meeting.  Although the members of the subcommittee each individually support the efforts of the selected non-profits, they are issuing this joint statement in regards to their concerns.   Read More...

Grist for the Mill: Ravi has a new developer-union deal and it comes with a $3 million dollar payoff

Word is out in Hoboken this weekend about Mayor Ravi Bhalla’s newest backroom developer deal for the downtown hotel and it’s going to kick up a storm.

Remember the original “needle” style boutique hotel proposal languishing for years? Finally, it was approved as a 17 story building and applauded by the construction unions who spent tens of thousands of dollars at the close of the ugly mayoral race last year to push Ravi Bhalla over the line. Those tens of thousands don’t include the millions in free publicity when the Bhalla terror flyer landed to help him eek out a win with 32% of the vote. Read More...

Bob Hugin returns home to Union City in a dead heat for New Jersey’s US Senate seat

Two older men approach outside the Five Star Diner late Friday afternoon and one says in an unmistakable thick Old Union City accent, “Didn’t I see you at an earlier Hugin event in town?” The man immediately dives into his immense distaste for Senator Bob Menendez without missing a beat upon hearing no. He speaks through a smile as if he’s recounting the details of becoming a father for the first time.

A car comes cruising down a busy 32nd Street and the driver yells out the window with a greeting in Spanish. A full-throated response rings back before the man returns to our conversation and says, “That’s (name redacted), a Union City commissioner and (they) support Bob Hugin but can’t say it publicly. The threat is dialed into Mendendez matter-of-factly. This is, after all, the Hudco boss’ turf and home base. Read More...

The Pupie-Mason gang is not getting together again

The shot heard round the Mile Square City after the arrest of a Vote by Mail soldier inside the glorious campaign-loving confines of the Hoboken Housing Authority is reverberating.

No one feels the single arrest to date is the finale. Finally, Hoboken made the grade and became worthy of federal law enforcement action, even though it hails back to its 2013 election.

Frank “Pupie” Raia and Hoboken’s notorious
former Councilwoman Beth Mason in happier days.
They united under the “One Hoboken” moniker
in the 2013 Hoboken mayoral race she originally
coined in her doomed 2009 mayoral campaign.

Additional details of the alleged systematic vote buying have come to the fore and seen broader reporting adding to the original investigations published on this website in 2010. Read More...

Councilwoman Tiffanie Fisher: “The End of Free Parking Starts Monday, 10/1”

Official release:

Dear friends and neighbors:   The Administration announced Friday evening its plan to roll out new metered parking city-wide for visitors to Hoboken starting Monday, October 1st.  This will convert all four-hour, free parking on non-resident sides of the street to metered, four-hour parking.  Effectively this means an end to free parking in Hoboken between 9am and 9pm, Monday through Saturday.  Visitors, like residents, will now be required to pay for parking.
  • NOTE: The rollout will begin from 8th – 13th, between Washington and Bloomfield.
  • At this time, this will be the only area affected.
As part of the roll out, the City is piloting the use of virtual meters via mobile payment zones instead of having physical parking meters.  Visitors will be able to pay for parking using the mobile app or by calling the meter provider ParkMobile.  Although as of this writing, no signs have been posted in the area first affected, be on the lookout for a sign that will look something like this:   How will this affect you and your visitors?
  • No changes for those with resident stickers; business, temporary, senior or other permits; or visitor permits or hangtags.

  • For visitors with no hangtag or permit:
  • On the non-resident side only, where there is a “WHITE” sign, will still be able to park for 4 hours, however, will be required to pay the “meter”.
