Breaking: $2 million SLAPP against online speech of Hoboken residents!
Please see the Hoboken Journal for the full details of a SLAPP against Grafix Avenger, MSV and double digits of Hoboken commenters – 10 John Doe defendants.
The 35 page defamation complaint’s filing came exactly two weeks after the last Hoboken City Council meeting where Councilwoman Beth Mason said in reply to a MSV request she make public the records of her Mason Civic League charity:
SLAPP stands for Strategic Litigation Against Public Participation and is described in the mission statement by the Public Participation Project:
…(working) to protect citizens from lawsuits designed to chill their ability to communicate with their government or speak out on issues of public interest. Such lawsuits, called Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation (SLAPPs), pose serious dangers to free expression throughout the country.
There is no litigation by the City of Hoboken against MSV or any other local writer.
