City Council @ 7:00 – The Agenda be Jamming
Tonight’s meeting will be slamming and not just for July. There’s big legislation on deck and the public will get a chance to weigh in on much of it as it’s up for final approval.
From ordinances on Corner Cars to Campaign Finance Reform to Class II Officers, lifting hiring restrictions from within Hoboken and moving municipal elections to November, this is going to be one hot summer night.
The last two items promise some fireworks. The Old Guard is not keen on seeing higher voter turnout in the fall. After all they have a limited pool to draw votes and the best way for them to get the results they seek is keep apathy high on a nice summer like spring day when their voters turn out as if their lives depended on it. Sometimes they are right, they do depend on it.
Taxpayers are so focused on their busy lives they will easily overlook municipal elections and pay the piper later.
Things are changing and moving the elections to November may be one of them. You could see some brass knuckles come out on this and other items. A retooled, amped up Councilman Mike Russo promises to show up and throw down no doubt. But will anyone show up in the ring to oppose him or will they merely present their own perspective and then go to a vote?
Well all that remains to be seen.
If you are sipping lemonade in the summer weather, you can watch and comment here, but the real action promises to be in City Council Chambers. You should try to make it and speak on an issue like the November election move if you can.
See you then.
